A New Look at John Calvin John Calvin was born in France in 1509. He was one of the greatest church reformers of the sixteenth century. At age twenty-seven, he published the first edition of his Institutes of the Christian Religion. He went to Geneva to do his difficult but epoch-making Christian work in 1536 and died in 1564. He preached and lectured more than four hundred times each year, and produced fifty-nine volumes of the Calvini Opera. In addition to being a great theologian he was a serious church worker who, with complete self-dedication, persistently labored for the effectiveness of the mission of the Church with his great passion to follow the direction of the Holy Spirit. Here the author provides rich materials for people to understand how and why Calvin was so passionate about the success of the mission of the Church and the necessity of following the direction of the Holy Spirit. The Author David S. Chen, B.Th., B.D., Th.M., S.T.M., Th.D., was a professor of systematic theology, Christian ethics, and world religions at Taiwan Theological Seminary in Taipei, Taiwan. Towards the end of his teaching he was its president. Afterwards, he served the First Reformed Church in Ridgewood, New Jersey for twenty years. After his retirement, he continued to preach for many Christian congregations. Currently, he and his musician wife, Margaret are active members of the First Presbyterian Church in Easton, Pennsylvania. Their grown children are Shirley and John, and their grandchildren are Jeffrey and Victoria.

John Calvin saw this world as God’s theater where his glory is always on display. Just as “day and night pour forth speech,” the universe and history are not silent either; they tell the glory of God. Reflecting on over 500 years of Calvin’s legacy, John Piper and this book’s other contributors invite us to join Calvin in the theater of God. Stemming from the Desiring God 2009 National Conference, this volume includes chapters by Julius Kim, Douglas Wilson, Marvin Olasky, Mark Talbot, Sam Storms, and John Piper. It touches on topics such as Calvin’s life, the Christian meaning of public life, sin and suffering, the joy of the last resurrection, and Jesus Christ as the dénouement of God’s story. Editors John Piper and David Mathis, along with the contributors, make John Calvin’s Christ-exalting perspective on the glory of God accessible to today’s readers. Both Calvinists and other evangelicals interested in the life and work of Calvin will find these essays refreshing and instructive, leading to a robust understanding of the world as the theater of God.

How does God bring His Word into our lives? The answer is: by the Holy Spirit. By the Spirit the Word was revealed and written. By the Spirit the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. By the Spirit the Word roots itself in the hearts of sinners and produces fruit. Calvin recognized long ago that the Holy Spirit is the bond of union between believers and Christ. Jonathan Edwards said that the Spirit is the sum of all Christ bought for His people with His precious blood. How precious then is the Spirit, and how important to know Him and His ways! In this book, a team of pastor-theologians uncover the rich biblical teachings about the work of the Holy Spirit. How was the Spirit involved in the human life of Jesus Christ? What is a spiritual person? How does the Spirit open the mind of sinners to trust in Christ? What does it mean to serve God in the power of the Spirit? How does the Spirit’s sovereign work relate to our responsibility in evangelism? These questions and more are addressed in this book. In his study of a wide range of Calvin's works, Dr. Wallace has found that all Calvin's decisions on widely differing aspects of the Christian life can be understood and seen in their unity as they arise from his doctrine of the person and work of Christ as involving, once-for-all, the sanctification and destiny of the Church. In this context the book shows that humanity lives the Christian life as they seek to fulfill their calling to royal priesthood in Christ in union with his death and resurrection.

Christian Spirituality and Ethical Life offers a helpful study of the place of the Spirit in John Calvin's theology. It also discovers a notion of the spiritual life in connection with ethical life. It thus overcomes the prevailing popular pictures about the theology of John Calvin in several significant ways, providing a refreshing alternative to the anemic spirituality so prevalent today. It can be stated confidently that Calvin was a theologian of the Holy Spirit in solidarity with the poor, standing in openness to others.

Light For The City written by Lester DeKoster and has been published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

"Light of the City" introduces readers to a unique view of John Calvin's life and thought, one that not only challenges past readings of Calvin but also seeks to reinvigorate the role of preaching as proclamation for modern civic life. According to Lester DeKoster, the doctrine of predestination as preached by Calvin makes building the kingdom of God, rather than evangelism, the sole and highest calling of Christians. Calvin's indifference to missions was rooted in his understanding that predestination leaves evangelism with nothing to give away; instead, daily labor on behalf of God's kingdom is the central act of divine worship. Calvin's preaching, his "Institutes of the Christian Religion," and his leadership of the church and civic government in Geneva were each, DeKoster maintains, directed toward establishing God's kingdom on earth. Furthermore, Western democracy as envisioned by Thomas Jefferson and others is a direct result of such Word-inspired civil government. Properly understanding Scripture as a dynamic creative Agent of the City means that faithfully preaching today, just as in Calvin's day, will continue to dramatically evoke the City as God's kingdom on earth. Lester DeKoster's style reminds me of Thomas Carlyle. He takes the English language and -- as only a master of prose can do -- transforms that language into something powerful and imposing. . . . This book will prove to be an enduring monument, not only in the field of Calvin studies but far beyond that. -- John Richard de Witt First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, South Carolina
