Now in its third edition, The Brain and Behavior continues on its mission to present a simplified and accessible introduction to behavioral neuroanatomy. Human behavior is a direct reflection of the anatomy of the central nervous system, and it is the goal of the behavioral neuroscientist to uncover its neuroanatomical basis. Much of the new content in this edition reflects advances in functional magnetic resonance imaging. The text is presented in a highly structured and organized format to help the reader distinguish between issues of anatomical, behavioral and physiological relevance. Simplified and clear diagrams are provided throughout the chapters to illustrate key points. Case examples are explored to set the neuroanatomy in the context of clinical experience. This will be essential reading for behavioral clinicians including psychiatrists, neuropsychiatrists, neurologists, psychologists and clinical neuroscientists.

Recent research in the fields of attachment and trauma is once more pointing to the contribution of early relational failures to extreme psychic suffering. 'Disorganised' patterns of attachment, identified in children whose caregivers are simultaneously a source of fear and a source of comfort, have been linked to the development of both dissociative and so called 'borderline' disorders in adult life. The conference was to bring together speakers able to extend our thinking and bring insights from attachment theory and psychoanalysis to the current debate about the links between the traumatic disorganisation of attachment relationships and more severe mental and emotional distress - dissociative states, borderline experiences and psychosis - as they emerge in clinical practice. The papers in this volume have in common a committed insistence upon placing human relationship at the centre of their accounts of extreme psychological suffering, both as the source of injury and, most hopefully, as the potential agent of repair. In this respect, they contribute fittingly in his centenary year to the continuation and extension of John Bowlby's pioneering work for the understanding, treatment and relief of such suffering.

The adrenal gland is vitally important to health and secretes hormones that control many bodily processes ranging from normal metabolism to the response to stressful circumstances. The corticosteroid hormones are the basis for anti-inflammatory medicines and are very widely prescribed. Changes in the function of the adrenal gland, either naturally through stress or disease, or through the action of drugs and chemicals, can have a major impact on the body.; This text focuses on adrenal toxicity, examining how drugs and chemicals can directly and indirectly affect this gland. Coverage includes: classification of the types of adrenal and endocrine toxicity; the mechanistic and molecular basis of toxicity; reasons why the adrenal is the most common target organ in the endocrine system; drug toxicity specific to patients with adrenal disorders; drug- corticosteroid interactions; adverse drug reactions; and how the adrenal gland is vital in tolerance to toxic insult.
