ESL/EFL Teaching and Inspection is a collection of seven (7) thoroughly researched and classroom-tested articles on the Cameroonian educational system and English as a Second Language (ESL) / English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching and inspection methodologies. The articles centre on critiques of the Cameroon education system, the techniques of teaching pronunciation, reading and grammar; course material evaluation and finally, the inspection of all of the above. CHI CHE has chosen only a few of these areas he considers thorny to teachers in ESL/EFL teaching and inspection world-wide and in Cameroon in particular, in order to share his experiences with them in these teaching/learning areas.

This reference book focuses on the general theories and trends in English Language study before delving into the Competence(-cy)-based Approach (CBA) through Cameroonian Real-life Situations (RLS). It showcases what the CBA-RLS is, and proposes how to teach, assess and feedback it such that learners after their training, are not only 'knowledgeable' in English but are especially, competent and autonomous 'users' of this language in interactive and communicative real-life-problem-solving. The book is highly recommended for English Language teachers, teachers-in-training and general users and learners of this language in Cameroon and the world. It also refocuses school and educational actors and course book writers on the curricula 'paradigm shift' in Cameroon and any other educational actors the world over who have embraced the CBA and similar approaches. The boon of the book are the 'hands-on' pedagogic toolkits such as the English curriculum designs, schemes of work, lesson plans and sample lessons, and then feedback mechanisms.

This booklet is a commendable self-help learning and institutional pedagogic tool. It is part of a larger book whose granular interface starting with the Mankon Language sound and writing systems through grammar and vocabulary studies to historical discourse, facilitates the learning of the language. The language learning approach is situational-based with re-enforcement dialogues and passages reflecting everyday life. The pictorial illustrations are an adjuvant for word and scenic “imaging” for easier meaning decoding. Of course, each unit culminates in a test exercise.

Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Didactics - English - Grammar, Style, Working Technique, grade: 16, University of Yaoundé 1 (Faculty of Education), language: English, abstract: This work set out to investigate English language teaching in General Teacher Training Colleges (GTTCs) with focus on strategies that can enhance trainees' oral competences in the teaching of oral aspects of English during micro-teaching and beyond. The study was motivated by our observation that pronunciation is hardly taught in primary schools in the Francophone sub-system of education in Cameroon. It was hypothesized that the initial training received by French-speaking student teachers in Government Bilingual Teacher Training (GBTTC) College Nlongkak does not equip them with adequate skills to teach English pronunciation activities effectively. The data for this qualitative study was collected through lesson observation and document analysis. The typical sampling method was applied in order to come up with the sample population. This population consisted of trainers and trainees of GBTTC Yaounde-Nlongkak. The data collected were analysed following the content analysis method and against the back-drop of the research questions that guided the study. The following findings were obtained. First, the frequency of lessons on English pronunciation pedagogy was not the same in all classes. Second, schemes of work found in most logbooks studied pay little attention to the oral aspects of English. Third, methods and techniques that trainers used to teach English pronunciation pedagogy were not informed by current methodologies in pronunciation pedagogy. Fourth, it was revealed that most trainees taught very few lessons in the domain of oral language. Fifth, most of the trainees had difficulties preparing lessons on English pronunciation according to the exigencies of the Competence Based Approach. Sixth, all student teachers showed no mastery of the subject matter and the teaching of the oral domain of English Language during micro-teaching. These findings imply that the input received by trainees does not build their competences in teaching activities of the domain of oral language. It is therefore suggested that initial training of teacher trainers at GTTC should be revisited. School administrators, policymakers, trainers, and trainees should reconsider the importance of teaching activities of the domain of oral language and the building of trainees' and trainers' competences.

Amidst the transformative tides reshaping the realm of English language education, educators, researchers, and practitioners grapple with a myriad of contemporary challenges. In recent years, the landscape of teaching and learning English as a second or foreign language (L2) has undergone a seismic shift, prompting a reevaluation of established practices. The dynamics of L2 education now face burgeoning issues such as fluctuating motivation levels among learners, evolving engagement dynamics in classrooms, and the expanding influence of technological advancements, particularly the pervasive use of computer-mediated communication, altering the traditional boundaries of language acquisition. The urgency to address these multifaceted concerns serves as the impetus for Exploring Contemporary English Language Education Practices, an edited book that unravels the complexities of the present-day L2 education panorama. This comprehensive volume, encapsulated by the title Exploring Contemporary English Language Education Practices, is not just a compilation of insights; it is a roadmap for navigating the intricate terrain of modern language education. The chapters within this book delve deep into the intricate fabric of second language motivation, learner engagement, emotional dimensions in language learning, classroom assessment strategies, corrective feedback methodologies, and the symbiotic relationship between technology and language acquisition.

What English Teachers Need to Know, a set of companion texts designed for pre-service teachers and teachers new to the field of ELT, addresses the key question: What do English language teachers need to know and be able to do in order for their students to learn English? These texts work for teachers across different contexts (countries where English is the dominant language, one of the official languages, or taught as a foreign language); different levels (elementary/primary, secondary, college or university, or adult education); and different learning purposes (general English, workplace English, English for academic purposes, or English for specific purposes). Volume I, on understanding learning, provides the background information that teachers need to know and be able to use in their classroom. Volume II, on facilitating learning, covers the three main facets of teaching: planning, instructing, and assessing. Volume III, on designing curriculum, covers the contexts for, processes in, and types of ELT curricula—linguistic based, content-based, learner-centered, and learning-centered. Throughout the three volumes, the focus is on outcomes, that is, student learning. Features • Situated in current research in the field of English language teaching and other disciplines that inform it • Sample data, including classroom vignettes • Three kinds of activities/tasks: Reflect, Explore, and Expand
