Imperium And Cosmos written by Paul Rehak and has been published by Univ of Wisconsin Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-05-20 with Art categories.

Caesar Augustus promoted a modest image of himself as the first among equals (princeps), a characterization that was as popular with the ancient Romans as it is with many scholars today. Paul Rehak argues against this impression of humility and suggests that, like the monarchs of the Hellenistic age, Augustus sought immortality—an eternal glory gained through deliberate planning for his niche in history while flexing his existing power. Imperium and Cosmos focuses on Augustus’s Mausoleum and Ustrinum (site of his cremation), the Horologium-Solarium (a colossal sundial), and the Ara Pacis (Altar to Augustan Peace), all of which transformed the northern Campus Martius into a tribute to his major achievements in life and a vast memorial for his deification after death. Rehak closely examines the artistic imagery on these monuments, providing numerous illustrations, tables, and charts. In an analysis firmly contextualized by a thorough discussion of the earlier models and motifs that inspired these Augustan monuments, Rehak shows how the princeps used these on such an unprecedented scale as to truly elevate himself above the common citizen.

Treats ancient sites & monuments in the northern Campus Martius. For centuries during the Republic the field of the god Mars lay outside the city of Rome on its northwestern limit. Some political activities (for ex., public assemblies of citizens) & many religious activities (for ex., the cult of Mars) took place there. Pompey & Caesar began to alter the aspect of the land with a theater & its great colonnade, a hall of assembly & on the edge of the city a new forum with a temple. Emp. Augustus & his son-in-law Agrippa quickened the process of urbanization with a building program, combined with efforts to bring the Tiber River under control. Here is the story of the development of the terrain from the end of the Republic to the onset of church bldg. Illus.

This volume focuses on a specific class of sites to see in Rome, namely, the archaeological sites of ancient Rome. By ancient Rome, we mean the Rome from the city's founding in 753 BC to the end of the Roman Empire in 476 AD. The approach we take is that of self-guided walks through the various neighborhoods of the city center. Along the route of each walk, the remnants of the story of Rome are identified and explained. A detailed map is provided so that one is able to follow the routes through the often-confusing streets and alleys of Rome. The walk included in this guidebook explores the Campus Martius, the large field dedicated to the Mars, the god of war. During the Republic, this mostly open ground, situated north and west of the Capitoline Hill and the Roman Forum, was the place where men gathered to form the Roman legions in preparation for military expeditions. The Campus Martius also was the location of the voting precincts in which the clans of Rome met to elect the magistrates that would rule the city. In the Late Republic and Early Empire, the Campus Martius became the place where an extensive building program began to fill the open spaces with theaters, temples, baths and other monuments. The construction of monumental structures continued in the first and second centuries AD, especially after the great fire of 80 AD that devastated a large part of the Campus Martius. Of the twenty-two sites visited on this walk, some will be familiar (the Pantheon, the Column of Marcus Aurelius, the Stadium of Domitian, the Sacred Area of Largo Argentina), but others may be completely new to you (the Baths of Agrippa, the Basilica of Neptune, the Temple of Isis, the Saepta Julia, the Crypta Balbi). We hope that you will enjoy them all. This self-guided walk begins and ends at Rome's Termini Metro Station. The Metro station is located in the Termini Railway Station, and both lines of the Metro network are accessible at the Termini. This permits you to make efficient use of the Metro and walking to do an optimal amount of sightseeing in the limited amount of time available during a short stay in the Eternal City. The Metro is convenient, inexpensive and easy to use. The more you become familiar with the system, the better you are able to get around Rome and its sites.

Shortly after the death in 161 of Antoninus Pius, his sons dedicated a column to him as a funerary monument. The form of the column in general and the reliefs on the pedestal in particular raise problems central to the understanding of Roman art. In this first thorough study, illustrated with nearly 100 photographs, Lise Vogel restores the column to its rightful place as one of the major monuments of Roman art. In addition, she re-evaluates the meaning of the column of Antoninus Pius in the context of the development of second century Roman imperial sculpture.
