As Europe goes astray, deeply conflicted about where it is within and with the world, it does not know what it wants to know about, or do, with the racial subject. In this situation, the Muslim becomes an intense source of anxiety, one that is at once terrifying and called to answer for Europe’s existential fear of relegation. Islamophobia thus represents both the racism constitutive of European modernity and is also symptomatic of contemporary transformations in racist power, knowledge, and governance, propelled by technologies and economies of endless wars on terror. But how might the Muslim speak about the world, its past, and unfolding terrors? Which questions must she answer, and which answers does Europe deem acceptable? Presenting a speculative theory of the post-racial subject of Islamophobia, Can Muslims Think? is an attempt to build a vocabulary for analyzing the complexities of racism today, its potential futurity, and techniques for its dismantling.

“Elucidating . . . describes the basics of Islam, including the Qur’an and hadith, the life of Muhammad and the history of Islam and Muslims.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “The world is green and beautiful; and God has appointed you as His trustee over it.”—The Prophet Muhammad Islam is one of the great monotheistic religions of the world. It produced a magnificent civilization, envied for its science and learning, spanning over a thousand years. The teachings of Islam emphasize unity, humility, forgiveness and love of God. The Qur’an sings the virtues of knowledge and rationality. The life of Muhammad demonstrates the importance of tolerance, social justice and brotherhood. In Sufism, Islam presents a mystical system based on love and devotion. So why is Islam associated with hatred, violence, obstinacy and bigotry? Ziauddin Sardar examines the true teachings of Islam and explores the reality of the Muslim world today. Emphasizing the diversity of Islam and its ideals, he assesses the role Islam plays in the lives of ordinary Muslims and how Islamic beliefs and practices help Muslims understand the modern world. “Ziauddin Sardar is arguably one of the best-known Muslim public intellectuals in the world today. He is an iconoclast, often a gadfly and undoubtedly one of the few Muslim intellectuals who span the proverbial Two Cultures.”—Muslim News “Among the many sanguine introductions to Islam, Sardar’s moves immediately to the front rank for its readability.”—Booklist

The view of world events from the Muslim perspective is naturally quite different. It is not always available first hand in the West. The book attempts to bridge this gap. It examines the historical setting and background of the inter-action with the West to explain how the Muslims think and feel, not only about the current situation but also about the West itself, its motives and intentions. Contrary to President Bush's claim, they do not hate the West for its achievements or freedoms but for what it does to them. In the past twenty-five years, nearly four million Muslim men, women and children have been killed in religious pogroms and wars waged or supported by the West in Europe, Africa and Asia. More than eight million Muslims have been driven out of their homes and obliged to live in squalid refugee camps scattered throughout the world. Much of this suffering has been inflicted for political and economic reasons. These crimes against humanity are being covered up or justified through an organized and well-orchestrated media campaign aimed at demonizing Islam and the Muslims in the West. There can be little chance for peace as long as this injustice persists and people continue to be persecuted and denied their legitimate rights and liberties. The author contends that much of the blame rests with the Muslims themselves, specifically with their ruling elites, for failing to keep-up with developments in the rest of the world and for selling themselves short.

History indicates that Islam spread in its early times throughout Asia, Africa, and Europe very rapidly. Probably no other religion spread throughout the world as fast as Islam did. It is an undeniable fact that the Quran is a living book that has influenced millions of people through its beauty and style. The superiority of the Quranic discourse was, and still is, challenging. But Islam lovers do not give importance to the value of science and modern education. But still, people of third-world countries do not try to understand what actually Islam is. It is not even translated in Quran! The Quran deals with both positive and negative issues. Many Muslims hold a different view about Islam, some positive and some negative. That’s why they easily get puzzled and can’t take a proper decision. My intent is not to harm Islam in any way but to encourage more critical thinking using reason and logic. It’s the accepting of ideas hammered into your head from childhood without critically examining those ideas with an adult mind. It’s the idea of being so committed to something being true; one loses all ability to reason and think logically. My goal for this book is to make you think about certain ideas harder than you ever did before. I want to make you question your own beliefs and think about how you came to hold those beliefs in the first place. I want you to challenge any of my ideas that do not make sense to you or ideas with which you disagree. I am simply going back to the very beginning (literally) and critically examine some of the more universally accepted beliefs that we hold today. As you follow me on this journey, it’s my hope that you will see that the idea of divine revelation may just be a lot more human than divine.

Bowen asks not the usual question--how well are Muslims integrating in France?--but, rather, how do French Muslims think about Islam? In particular, Bowen examines how French Muslims are fashioning new Islamic institutions and developing new ways of reasoning and teaching. He looks at some of the quite distinct ways in which mosques have connected with broader social and political forces, how Islamic educational entrepreneurs have fashioned niches for new forms of schooling, and how major Islamic public actors have set out a specifically French approach to religious norms. --from publisher description.

Islam is a very mysterious and complex faith, one of intellectual depth in prayer and practice. It is unfortunate that the teachings of Islam have been marred by centuries of intellectual malaise, political misdirection, extremism, and disunity, leaving many spiritual wanderers both Muslim and non-Muslim to ponder a plethora of unaddressed questions about these sacred teachings. In his newest book, The Muslim Book of Why: What Everyone Should Know about Islam, author, scholar, and leading jihad theorist Warithudeen Umar highlights the concept of ijtihad in an attempt to help answer many of today's most pressing questions about Islam. Ijtihad is described as a creative and disciplined intellectual effort to derive legal rulings from Islamic sources while taking into consideration the variables brought on by the fluctuating circumstances of the Muslim world. Though the world has changed and expanded, humanity's need for these teachings viewed through the clarifying concept of ijtihad has not. To right these wrongs of gross misguidance within Muslim society, we must deconstruct history in order to discern what went wrong after the revelation of the Qur'an was shared with the world. The Muslim Book of Why seeks to do so, refocusing Muslim thought on a life of faith, family development, and worship.

Islam In Stories written by Antonie Wessels and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Christianity and other religions categories.

Islam can be called a 'narrative community': in which stories are told about how people deal with one another and with God; what norms and values they have in their life that can give them guidance in any age and in any new environment; how they can cope with their life and death; and how faith, morality, rules of behaviour can be handed on to the following generation. Judaism, Christianity and Islam are all three narrative communities. It is good if they all learn to tell one another stories in order to contribute to mutual understanding. This book begins with 'Negative Stories' since many people in the West primarily think about stories of fanaticism, intolerance and terror. Then the stories around Muhammad's call to prophethood are discussed as well as stories from the Qur'an (in comparison with Biblical one's). The Islamic way (sharia'ah) indicates the way shown to Muslims. 'Stories of Faith' is about what Muslims believe and how faith relates to philosophy. Besides the 'external' way of the law Muslims follow the mystical path dealt with in 'Mystical Stories'. How Muslims relate to Jews and Christians is discussed in the story of a Father who had two sons: Abraham (Ibrahim) and his two sons Ishmael and Isaac. The Jesus of the Muslims is presented in the different stories regarding his life and ministry. In 'Islam in the diaspora' Muslim novelists living in Europe tell about the Muslim identity between different cultures. The book concludes with the story of the common pilgrimage of human kind symbolised in the story of the mysterious 'Green man'.

From the kind of coverage Islam and Muslims receive in the media you would think it is an irrational and violent way of life, adopted by a bunch of lunatics. There are lunatics and terrorists in the Muslim community, but it is not possible that the more than one and a half billion Muslims around the world are all lunatics and terrorists. It is important that you find out what these people really think and believe because they live in your neighborhood. They are teachers in your child's school, they seek political office, they serve you coffee at your favorite diner, they design and build the houses in which you live and they are your family doctor. Some of them are also refugees. This book is a collection of answers to common questions people ask about Islam and Muslims. It is written so agnostics, atheists, bigots, journalists, movie makers, racists, politicians, Christians, Jews, dummies and the common person can sort through the confusion or prejudices with which they view Islam and Muslims and learn what Islam really is.
