Born in 1893 into the only African American family in White Sulphur Springs, Montana, Emmanuel Taylor Gordon (1893–1971) became an internationally famous singer in the 1920s at the height of the Harlem Renaissance. With his musical partner, J. Rosamond Johnson, Gordon was a crucially important figure in popularizing African American spirituals as an art form, giving many listeners their first experience of black spirituals. Despite his fame, Taylor Gordon has been all but forgotten, until now. Michael K. Johnson illuminates Gordon’s personal history and his cultural importance to the legacy of the Harlem Renaissance, arguing that during the height of his celebrity, Gordon was one of the most significant African American male vocalists of his era. Gordon’s story—working in the White Sulphur Springs brothels as an errand boy, traveling the country in John Ringling’s private railway car, performing on vaudeville stages from New York to Vancouver to Los Angeles, performing for royalty in England, becoming a celebrated author with a best-selling 1929 autobiography, and his long bout of mental illness—adds depth to the history of the Harlem Renaissance and makes him one of the most fascinating figures of the twentieth century. Through detailed documentation of Gordon’s career—newspaper articles, reviews, letters, and other archival material—the author demonstrates the scope of Gordon’s cultural impact. The result is a detailed account of Taylor’s musical education, his career as a vaudeville performer, the remarkable performance history of Johnson and Gordon, his status as an in-demand celebrity singer and author, his time as a radio star, and, finally, his descent into madness. Can’t Stand Still brings Taylor Gordon back to the center of the stage.

The collection focuses on commerce, the crowd, performance and image, history and memory, and romance. Prayer has long had an action component to it. There are many ways we can pray that involve our senses and our bodies. Journaling, skipping rocks, drawing, singing, touching, dancing, even walking can be acts of prayer. William Tenny-Brittian, himself diagnosed with adult ADHD, goes back to ancient times and into the techno-generation to share ten types of kinesthetic prayer that will help even the most fidgety connect with God. He has filled Prayer for People Who Can't Sit Still with ideas, easy-to-follow instructions, and ways to adapt kinesthetic prayer to most any situation and "personal limitation." Kinesthetic prayer can also have profound effects on the prayer life of children and youth. Prayer for People Who Can't Sit Still is a valuable resource in children's and youth ministries, helping these action-oriented age groups to find ways to build relationships with God. A relationship takes time together, says William Tenny-Brittian. Prayer for People Who Can't Sit Still is written to help you spend more meaningful time with God.

“Simon Winchester never disappoints, and The Men Who United the States is a lively and surprising account of how this sprawling piece of geography became a nation. This is America from the ground up. Inspiring and engaging.” —Tom Brokaw Simon Winchester, acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of Atlantic and The Professor and the Madman, delivers his first book about America: a fascinating popular history that illuminates the men who toiled fearlessly to discover, connect, and bond the citizenry and geography of the U.S.A. from its beginnings. How did America become “one nation, indivisible”? What unified a growing number of disparate states into the modern country we recognize today? To answer these questions, Winchester follows in the footsteps of America’s most essential explorers, thinkers, and innovators, such as Lewis and Clark and the leaders of the Great Surveys; the builders of the first transcontinental telegraph and the powerful civil engineer behind the Interstate Highway System. He treks vast swaths of territory, from Pittsburgh to Portland, Rochester to San Francisco, Seattle to Anchorage, introducing the fascinating people who played a pivotal role in creating today’s United States. Throughout, he ponders whether the historic work of uniting the States has succeeded, and to what degree. Featuring 32 illustrations throughout the text, The Men Who United the States is a fresh look at the way in which the most powerful nation on earth came together.

These poems, essentially about memories, are an attempt to give voice to some reflections through words. These are vignettes of events and situations that drift like clouds. Memories – some deeply personal and some recalled objectively – stay etched in the remote corners of our minds. They accompany us almost all the time, as we tend to recall the past. Most of these poems have no dates or mention of any event. However, some of them talk about particular episodes, not necessarily personal experiences, which have registered themselves indelibly in the poet’s mind. We all have memories – good and bad, bitter and sweet. And we long only for the fond ones, and want to forget those which are painful...but in vain. Sometimes, these memories visit us in our darkness and make us gloomy while at times, they offer us a ray of hope. As we recount a whiff, its fragrance stays with us.
