For the first time, Sing a New Song tells the stories of four Canadian bishops who pushed the envelope and changed the world. All have faced severe opposition; one was involved in the only Anglican schism in Canadian history; two jeopardized their careers; and one was voted the sixth most important person of the twentieth century whose world view has transformed the wider society. Over the last 150 years, George Hills, David Somerville, Douglas Hambidge, and Michael Ingham adopted unpopular causes with their eyes wide open. They were the men who fought for and won rights for aboriginals, women, and gays and lesbians. In finely drawn and thoroughly researched biographies, Julie H. Ferguson weaves the bishops' impact on society into Canada's history while delivering compelling insights into their personal and spiritual lives. Meet this quartet of sharply contrasting and fearless bishops in Sing a New Song.

For 15 years, Daniel Epstein, a Marketing Director at one of the world's largest corporations, Procter & Gamble, traveled the world for business and for faith. Motivated by his own search to fill the "God-sized hole" in his life, he did not know where it would lead. He felt that if he did not develop some type of spiritual faith he would die. Born and raised a Jew, Daniel's challenges with relationships, work, and "life" forced him at age 36 to get on his knees and pray to a God he did not know, a higher power not specific to either his own Judaism or any religion, and ask for help. In order to keep his new found sense of faith alive and to gain from the experience of others, Daniel created a spiritual exercise out of interviewing people around the world about the role of faith in their lives. As a photographer, Daniel also captured a moment with each person in a black and white portrait meant to evoke their true spirit. In 2012, Daniel launched Portraits on Faith online as the largest documentary project on faith ever compiled by a single person. Over 100 of the 500 portraits shot have been published from 27 countries, which have been viewed over 300,000 times by people around the world. As a culmination of all the work that has to this moment, Daniel is publishing the first volume of Portraits in Faith, which include over 100 portraits, quotes, and reflections on faith from people spanning the world, from over 40 faith traditions and denominations.

Since its organization in 1863 the Seventh-day Adventist Church has been counter cultural. In its Christian witness to modern society it has advocated keeping the seventh-day Sabbath, vegetarianism, abstinence from tobacco and alcohol and refusal of its members to bear arms. But the stance on the refusal to bear arms has seen a metamorphous in modern times. Today more Seventh-day Adventist young people have voluntarily joined the military than in any previous generation of the Church's history. This volume is a compliation of essays that were presented at a conference called to discuss the Adventist Church's position on concientious objection. The presenters considered the history of the Church's stand and the changing views. These discussions were not limited to American context but considered other countries including South Africa and Canada.

Decisive Democracy poses that the desire for and the commitment to democracy starts with a personal response to the Creator. Then a lifetime of service, participating in social institutions, will provide fruit and contentment. All social relationships, not just that of government to residents, contribute to a democratic society. It explores a new definition of democracy and how it is manifested. The foundation of democracy is either rooted in the Creator or humans, the choice of which distinguishes decisive from deceptive democracy. Canada has a multi-cultured population that is seeking a unifying foundation. Decide how you can participate responsibly.

A treasure trove of incredible lives lived. — RICK MERCER, comedian and author Muir sets out to restore the faces of women who worked and struggled in nineteenth-century Toronto. A fascinating read. — WARREN CLEMENTS, author and publisher Emphasizes the enormously influential role women had in laying the groundwork for life in the city today. — DR. ROSE A. DYSON, author of Mind Abuse: Media Violence and Its Threat to Democracy Women in nineteenth-century Toronto were integral to the life of the growing city. They contributed to the city’s commerce and were owners of stores, factories, brickyards, market gardens, hotels, and taverns; as musicians, painters, and writers, they were a large part of the city’s cultural life; and as nurses, doctors, religious workers, and activists, they strengthened the city’s safety net for those who were most in need. Their stories are told in this wide-ranging collection of biographies, the result of Muir’s research on early street directories and city histories, personal diaries, and other historical works. Muir references over four hundred women, many of whom are discussed in detail, and describes the work they undertook during a period of great change for Toronto.

The National Association for Multicultural Education in Washington, D.C., listed a number of issues that the school curriculum should address with reference to multicultural education, including racism, sexism, classism, linguicism, ablism, ageism, heterosexism, and religious intolerance. It is noteworthy that of all these issues, religion is about the only one that throughout history people are willing to die for, although whether what is at issue is really religion or other things such as territory is another matter. It is also interesting that all the others have isms in their names but religious issues are characterized by intolerance. Perhaps we should try to understand this intolerance and look at what steps might help to alleviate it. However, while intolerance might seem a simple thing, understanding what is behind it and how it plays such a crucial role in religion requires what we refer to in the Introduction chapter as a multifaceted approach at multiple levels. It is not enough just to try to dispel stereotypes of followers of other religions, or to point out commonalities in world religions. We should, for example, try to understand and appreciate how adherents of other religions try to answer questions regarding their adaptation to the contemporary environment. It is through understanding how different religions coexist side by side at various levels that we truly come to learn about religion in multicultural education.

There is very little information about the Jesus Elevator on the internet. Somehow, even Wikipedia missed it. In this book, you are going to learn about Hartley Somerville, a prairie born-again farmer who purchased a 75 foot tall grain elevator in Ellerslie, Alberta, moved it onto his farmstead and, in 1965, repurposed it into the biggest scripture sign Canada has ever seen. Fourteen years later, with the help of a few volunteers, Henry Vanderpyl undertook the task of renovating the elevator with a new verse. For twenty-four years, its endless message steered travelers—far and wide—alongside the Queen Elizabeth II highway at the south entrance to Edmonton: the Gateway to the North. Sometimes, God calls people to do big things. For Henry, big things done with calligraphy became his calling unto God.
