A number Of Officially designated public stockyards are operated under the super vision Of the Canadian Department Of Agriculture. Livestock for sale at these markets is consigned to commission firms who Operate On a fee basis. Sales are made to packers, to order buyers, and to traders. At the five larger markets the interests in the market are organized into a livestock exchange which has limited authority to regulate trading. The movement of livestock in and out of the stockyards is both by rail and by truck, with the latter of increasing importance. In general, all sales are by direct negotiations, but there is a growing movement in favor of sales by auction. Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture Circular: Livestock and Meat; February '77 Production of meat in the key commercial markets of the world (the United States, Canada, the European Community (ec), and Japan) in 1977 is forecast to remain practically unchanged from 1976 levels. Beef production is expected to be down percent because of 5 percent lower production in both the United States and the ec, but pork is expected to increase percent. Poultry production is forecast to increase 2 percent, while sheep meat production is expected to remain at about last year's levels. In the four key commercial markets net meat imports are forecast to increase by about tons-(carcass weight) in 1977. Most of the gain is expected in beef and veal imports, and will more than compensate for the greater quantity of pork expected to be exported from the EC this year. Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 14: February 7, 1927 Canadian livestock and meat prospects: The 1927 outlook for cattle in Canada is for comparatively short supplies, according to advance infor mation from the Annual Livestock Market and Meat Trade Review. The ex port trade, however, is'expected to profit by more favorable commercial ar rangements with Great Britain. The outstanding feature of the 1926 cattle market was the relatively good price paid for ordinary cattle. Such classes as cows, heifers and common cattle sold to better advantage than at any time within the past five years and represented the bright spot on the public sbock yards throughout 1926. Most feeders are reported as being very much dissatisfied with the result of their winter feeding as top steer classes did not enjoy a similarly good trade as the general run. The chief factor in the situation was felt to be the lack.of sufficient outlet in the British market. No very material increase in hog production is in sight in 1927 according to the Review. In 1926 the supply was far short of trade requirements and despite the lower markets in Great Britain, Canadian orc ducers found that outlet most remunerative. The sheep industry had a fair ly good season although prices on the wool market were not as remunerative as could be desired. Declines in cattle hide sales were more than offset by increases in calf and kip skins. Sales increases occurred as major buying countries worked off some of the accumulated inventory of late 1980 and early 1981. Live animal exports increased in value by about $40 million. Canada, after lifting its des certification requirement on October 27, 1980, was particularly attracted to the abundance of overfed cattle on the u.s. Market. Canada's cattle industry in 1981 witnessed low-market prices and restricted cattle feeding for most of the year. This was a result of above-average grain prices that encouraged imports of heavyweight cattle and high-quality beef.
