Excerpt from Canadian Livestock Industry The facilities used and.the methods followed in marketing livestock in Canada are very similar to those prevailing in the United States. A number Of Officially designated public stockyards are operated under the super vision Of the Canadian Department Of Agriculture. Livestock for sale at these markets is consigned to commission firms who Operate On a fee basis. Sales are made to packers, to order buyers, and to traders. At the five larger markets the interests in the market are organized into a livestock exchange which has limited authority to regulate trading. The movement of livestock in and out of the stockyards is both by rail and by truck, with the latter of increasing importance. In general, all sales are by direct negotiations, but there is a growing movement in favor of sales by auction. Excerpt from Canada's Livestock and Meat Industry Hog slaughter, on the other hand, dropped sharply by 20 percent during 1960, (after a 27-percent increase in 1959) as a result of a change in the government's hog price sup port program. Such short cyclical movements have been characteristic of Canadian hog production, and will probably continue. Excerpt from The French Canadian Cattle The frugality of these cattle is remarkable. Being small in size, they require little for their sustenance, and will live and even thrive where an Ayrshire or Shorthorn would starve. Being of a greedy nature they will accept the poorest of food, even bad straw, and will live on it though they know very well how to enjoy a good mess and give ample profit in return. In fact, no class of cattle can be fed at as little cost as a herd of French Canadian cattle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 16: January 30, 1928 Canadian cattle have good year: The Canadian cattle market of 1927 was one of the most favorable in the history of the industry, according to recent official statements. The good market in the United States for both cattle and beef was an outstanding factor in providing prosperity fdr Canadian producers. The number of cattle marketed, at Canadian stocks yards, however, was practically the same as that of 1926. Excluding the war years, 1927 brought the highest prices on record in Canada in relation to production costs, with all classes of cattle sharing in the strong price situation. Conditions in the United States at the end of 1927 have led Canadian producers to anticipate a continued strong demand for their products in this country, Cattle shipments to the United States for 1927 exceeded those of the preceding year by 120 per cent, While beef exports to this country increased 200 per cent. Further sharp declines occurred in the eiports'of Canadian cattle and beef to Great Britain. Detailed figures covering cattle and beef and other animals and their products appear on page 144. Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 14: February 7, 1927 Canadian livestock and meat prospects: The 1927 outlook for cattle in Canada is for comparatively short supplies, according to advance infor mation from the Annual Livestock Market and Meat Trade Review. The ex port trade, however, is'expected to profit by more favorable commercial ar rangements with Great Britain. The outstanding feature of the 1926 cattle market was the relatively good price paid for ordinary cattle. Such classes as cows, heifers and common cattle sold to better advantage than at any time within the past five years and represented the bright spot on the public sbock yards throughout 1926. Most feeders are reported as being very much dissatisfied with the result of their winter feeding as top steer classes did not enjoy a similarly good trade as the general run. The chief factor in the situation was felt to be the lack.of sufficient outlet in the British market. No very material increase in hog production is in sight in 1927 according to the Review. In 1926 the supply was far short of trade requirements and despite the lower markets in Great Britain, Canadian orc ducers found that outlet most remunerative. The sheep industry had a fair ly good season although prices on the wool market were not as remunerative as could be desired. Excerpt from Canada, Growth Potential of the Grain and Livestock Sectors Although Canada's wheat production through 1975 will be up from 1970-71 levels, it is not expected to reach levels attained during the mid-l96o's. Coarse grains pro duction will continue to increase rapidly. Beef production will increase but less rapidly than sharply increasing domestic demand. The difference will be made up more by increased imports rather than by decreased exports to the United States. Three factors will restrict somewhat the growth in beef output: Limited forage and pasture land, herd depletion in the late 1960's, and a steady decline in the dairy herd. Land available for expansion of cattle grazing is all in western Canada. Most of this land, which is on established farms, needs to be improved before cattle-carrying capacity can be increased. For significant increases in forage production, land would have to be cleared, pastures seeded, or cropland converted to forage. Government pro grams-particularly the 1971-73 forage incentive program, which has the goal of con verting 4 million acres of cropland to forage-will assist in providing the needed land resources for increased beef production. Under terms of the forage incentive program. The Government will pay producers Can$10 an acre for land converted from crops to perennial forage. An impediment to seeding pastures or establishing forage is the long wait before returns are received. Seeded pasture will not yield full returns until the fourth year after seeding. Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture Circular, Livestock and Meat: March 1981 Hides and skins exports increased almost $10 million. Declines in cattle hide sales were more than offset by increases in calf and kip skins. Sales increases occurred as major buying countries worked off some of the accumulated inventory of late 1980 and early 1981. Live animal exports increased in value by about $40 million. Canada, after lifting its des certification requirement on October 27, 1980, was particularly attracted to the abundance of overfed cattle on the u.s. Market. Canada's cattle industry in 1981 witnessed low-market prices and restricted cattle feeding for most of the year. This was a result of above-average grain prices that encouraged imports of heavyweight cattle and high-quality beef.
