In discussing works by major poets, including Paul Muldoon, Jo Shapcott and Christopher Reid, Cancer Poetry traces the complex ways in which poets represent cancer, and assesses how poetry can be instrumental to emotional recovery.

A Random Caller written by Heather Cameron and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-04-22 with Health & Fitness categories.

Cancer is a disease with a persona of mystery, often referred to through the use of negative metaphors such as alien, evil, and foreign, while its medical treatment and recovery phases are described with warfare metaphors, and sadly when death is the end result, one is said to have lost their battle with cancer. However, Cameron in this debut collection, draws the reader into the expansive territory of cancer poetry, where attempts are made to construct meaning far beyond the battlefield. The emotional roller coaster of cancer, the messy, at times humorous, at times ugly, aspects of cancer, its treatment, and its people are explored in this wide-ranging collection of poems that weave connections between nature and humanity into the clinical settings and finds quiet hope amidst the fear and suffering. Cameron speaks from her experience as cancer patient, but also from decades working as a health professional. She writes with a profound insight into the complexities of living and dying with serious illness, and of the grieving for those who are left behind. 'Heather Cameron's striking poems are alive to the true mess and unruliness of "the uncontrollable world". In this very assured debut collection there are reckonings and there are epiphanies but there remains an appealing openness to the unresolved, to ambivalence and an acknowledgment of ever-present dereliction. It is in no way easy to write about cancer with such a uniformly unsentimental and clear-eyed vision as this poet achieves here.' - Lucy Dougan

We all know someone. Or maybe that someone happens to be us. This groundbreaking landmark anthology explores the subject of cancer from all different points of view: patient, survivor, caregiver, lover, parent, child, doctor, surgeon, alternative healer, psychologist, compassionate human being, body part, and from the disease itself. The collection includes new and original poetry by established and emerging voices (some of whom are health practitioners): Molly Peacock, A.F. Moritz, Pamela Mordecai, Christian Bök, Catherine Graham, Canisia Lubrin, Bardia Sinaee, Ron Charach, Adam Sol, Emily Schultz, Jónína Kirton, and Zoe Whittall, and many others. Their work offers us new ways of seeing, understanding, and representing this ordinary and extraordinary experience. Current statistics predict 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. We need more art to understand the complexity and dimensions of what this means. This is an anthology for anyone who knows someone. This is an anthology for everyone.

"I almost didn't publish the poems in this volume. In the first place, the poems are so personal, all about my own cancer experience, that I thought no one would be interested. Secondly, the book contains almost 100 poems about cancer and death; I thoughy they might be too depressing for anyone to spend an otherwise pleasant evening reading. But then I concluded that perhaps people who are going through the same diagnosis and treatment might see a little bit of themselves in my journey"--Page 3.

Our Cancers written by Dan O'Brien and has been published by Acre Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-15 with Poetry categories.

Poet and playwright Dan O'Brien chronicles the year and a half during which both he and his wife were treated for cancer. On the fourteenth anniversary of 9/11--an event that caused their downtown apartment to become "suffused with the World Trade Center's carcinogenic dust"--Dan O'Brien's wife discovers a lump in her breast. Surgery and chemotherapy soon follow, and on the day of his wife's final infusion, O'Brien learns of his own diagnosis. He has colon cancer and will need to undergo his own intensive treatment over the next nine months. Our Cancers is a compelling account of illness and commitment, of parenthood and partnership. This spare and powerful sequence creates an intimate mythology that seeks meaning in illness while also celebrating of the resilience of sufferers, caregivers, and survivors. As O'Brien explains in an introduction, "The consecutiveness of our personal disasters, with a daughter not yet two years old at the start of it, was shattering and nearly silencing. At hospital bedsides, in hospital beds myself, and at home through the cyclical assaults of our therapies, these poems came to me in fragments, as if my unconscious were attempting to reassemble our lives, our identities and memories . . . as if I were in some sense learning how to speak again."
