Each of us will be touched by cancer in the course of our lifetime – as a person diagnosed with the disease or as a family member or friend who must witness its course in someone we love. For all of us, this encounter with cancer will entail an exploration of the margins of life and death. Too often, especially once the curative stage is passed, patients and their loved ones make this journey in silence and without the full support of a medical system whose chief mandate is to "win the battle" against cancer. In Cancer Stories five people share their journeys, their stories, and the suffering they faced before their deaths. These narratives chronicle the despair, hope, and love they experienced while living and dying with cancer, giving the power of the human spirit full voice. Lessons learned are presented as "gifts" at the conclusion of each of the five narratives. This book is for people living with the disease and their caregivers. Nurses and physicians, students in any health-related discipline, as well as persons engaged in qualitative research will also find this an invaluable resource. The importance of incorporating qualitative, research-based approaches in caring for the dying emerges from the narratives. Cancer Stories points toward a more holistic research/treatment agenda, one that bridges the medical and social sciences. David M. Gregory is associate professor in the Faculty of Nursing, University of Manitoba. Cynthia K. Russell is assistant professor in the College of Nursing, University of Tennessee, Memphis.

Live Strong written by The Lance Armstrong Foundation and has been published by Harmony this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-09-27 with Health & Fitness categories.

Survivors from all walks of life talk about what “living strong” in the face of cancer means to them. Since the now ubiquitous LIVESTRONG™ wristbands became available in May 2004, the Lance Armstrong Foundation has raised more than $50 million for cancer survivorship programs, and the signature phrase has become a battle cry for those who fight the disease every day. Now, the Lance Armstrong Foundation has compiled, from hours of videotaped interviews, poignant and dramatic personal accounts from cancer survivors. Covering a wide range of subjects, from grief to spousal relationships, employment discrimination to coping with medical bills, infertility to fear of recurrence, survivors share their experiences and speak candidly about how cancer has impacted their lives. For twenty-four-year-old Amy it’s how her illness changed her relationship with her parents. Mike, a male survivor of breast cancer, talks about gender stereotypes and genetic testing. And Eric, the father of a five-year-old survivor of a brain tumor, recalls how friends and strangers helped his family with financial issues and how the experience brought him and his wife closer together. While heartbreaking at times, these powerfully honest stories are ultimately uplifting and extremely reassuring to patients and their families. They offer the wisdom and hope that only survivors can give. LiveStrong is a remarkable testament to the resilience of the human spirit. From the introduction by Lance Armstrong: My work with the LAF shows me daily that sharing our stories and learning from one another’s experiences helps us cancer survivors continue to survive. Some people think the cancer experience is only about the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, as if after the disease goes into remission, it no longer exists. But survivorship goes beyond remission. Survivorship is an evolution.

Cancer Stories written by Esther Dreifuss-Kattan and has been published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with Art therapy categories.

Cancer Stories provides a vivid depiction of the inner experience of the cancer patient as revealed by the accounts of, and pictures created by, the patients themselves. Drawing on her clinical work as well as an extensive autobiographical literature, Dreifuss-Kattan takes the reader on a deeply moving journey through the psychological realities of cancer, beginning with the initial shock of diagnosis and continuing through the multiple treatments for cancer -- surgery, radiation, chemotherapy -- with their frequently harrowing side-effects. She then demonstrates how psychotherapy and art therapy can be valuable additions to the treatment of cancer patients, fostering creativity which, in turn, can be the vehicle for achieving new psychological integration even in the face of impending death.

After The Cure written by Emily K. Abel and has been published by NYU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-08-30 with Health & Fitness categories.

From the book jacket: Chemo Brain. Fatigue. Chronic Pain. Insomnia. Depression. These are just a few of the ongoing, debilitating symptoms that plague some breast cancer survivors long after their treatments have officially ended. After The Cure is a compelling read filled with fascinating portraits of women who are living with the aftermath of breast cancer. Having heard repeatedly that the problems are all in your head, many don't know where to turn for help. The doctors who now refuse to validate their symptoms are often the very ones they depended on to provide life-saving treatments. Sometimes family members, who provided essential support through months of chemotherapy and radiation, don't believe them. Their work lives, already disrupted by both cancer and its treatment, are further undermined by the lingering symptoms. And every symptom is a constant reminder of the trauma of diagnosis, the ordeal of treatment, and the specter of recurrence. Most narratives about surviving breast cancer end with the conclusion of chemotherapy and radiation, painting stereotypical portraits of triumphantly healthy survivors, women who not only survive but emerge better and stronger than before. After The Cure allows us to hear the voices of those who are silenced by the optimistic breast cancer culture, women who live with a broad array of health problems long after therapy ends. Here, at last, survivors step out of the shadows and speak compellingly about their real stories, giving voice to the complicated, often bittersweet realities of life after the cure.
