Voltaire's classic novel CANDIDE has been adapted many times through many different forms of media, but this 20th-century dramatic version is one of the best. Voltaire's story endures because the character of Candide is capable of being moved to any time or place, and still be understood--and enjoyed--by a brand new audience. In an irrational world where only diehard optimists like Dr. Pangloss can believe that everything is for the best, Voltaire's dissection of human follies rings true, even today. In the end, his best advice to the individual trying to cope with the joys and sorrows of everyday life is just to..."Cultivate your garden!"

The philosophical problem of evil—that a supposedly good God could allow terrible human suffering—troubled the minds of eighteenth-century thinkers as it troubles us today. Voltaire’s classic novel Candide relates the misadventures of a young optimist who leaves his sheltered childhood to find his way in a cruel and irrational world. Fast-paced and full of dark humor, the novel mocks the suggestion that “all is well” and challenges us to create a better world. This Broadview Edition follows the text of a 1759 English translation that was released concurrently with Voltaire’s first French edition. Candide is supplemented by Voltaire’s most important poetic and humanistic writings on God and evil, the Poem upon the Destruction of Lisbon and We Must Take Sides. The editor’s introduction situates the novel in its philosophical and intellectual setting; the appendices include other writings by Voltaire, as well as related writings by Bayle, Leibniz, Pope, Rousseau, and others that place the work in its poetic, philosophical, and humanistic contexts.

Candide is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to exploring the culture of knowledge specific to architecture. In this fifth issue of Candide, rather than one Essay, you will find six articles on the notion of architectural knowledge, and rather than one piece of Fiction, you will be pulled into seven episodes on the elusive quest for architectural greatness. Framed by these shorts, in Analysis, Ian Pepper challenges the reception of Richard Serra by looking at the American artist's intervention on a nineteenth-century railroad bridge, previously transformed by the Swiss engineer Robert Maillart. In Encounters, Kim Forster employs oral history to unearth stories from behind the scenes of New York's Institute of Architecture and Urban Studies (IAUS), focusing on its program of publications in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In Project, Luc Merx reflects on aspects of ruin and figuration in "Rokokorelevanz," a research and design project ongoing since 2005. With contributions by Mario Carpo, Kim Forster, Pedro Gadanho, Sophie Houdart, Luc Merx, Ian Pepper, and Katherine Romba, among others.

Candide, ou l'Optimisme (/kɒnˈdiːd/ kon-DEED, [5] French: [kɑ̃did] (About this soundlisten)) is a French satire first published in 1759 by Voltaire, a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment.[6] The novella has been widely translated, with English versions titled Candide: or, All for the Best (1759); Candide: or, The Optimist (1762); and Candide: Optimism (1947).[7] It begins with a young man, Candide, who is living a sheltered life in an Edenic paradise and being indoctrinated with Leibnizian optimism by his mentor, Professor Pangloss.[8] The work describes the abrupt cessation of this lifestyle, followed by Candide's slow and painful disillusionment as he witnesses and experiences great hardships in the world. Voltaire concludes Candide with, if not rejecting Leibnizian optimism outright, advocating a deeply practical precept, "we must cultivate our garden", in lieu of the Leibnizian mantra of Pangloss, "all is for the best" in the "best of all possible worlds"

Witty and caustic, Candide has ranked as one of the world's great satires since its first publication in 1759. In the story of the trials and travails of the youthful Candide, his mentor Dr. Pangloss, and a host of other characters, Voltaire mercilessly satirizes and exposes romance, science, philosophy, religion, and government.

Brought up in the household of a powerful Baron, Candide is an open-minded young man, whose tutor, Pangloss, has instilled in him the belief that 'all is for the best'. But when his love for the Baron's rosy-cheeked daughter is discovered, Candide is cast out to make his own way in the world. And so he and his various companions begin a breathless tour of Europe, South America and Asia, as an outrageous series of disasters befall them - earthquakes, syphilis, a brush with the Inquisition, murder - sorely testing the young hero's optimism.
