Bi- and multilingualism are of great interest for contemporary linguists since this phenomenon deeply reflects on language acquisition, language use, and sociolinguistic conditions in many different circumstances all over the world. Multilingualism was, however, certainly rather common already, if not especially, in the premodern world. For some time now, research has started to explore this issue through a number of specialized studies. The present volume continues with the investigation of multilingualism through a collection of case studies focusing on important examples in medieval and early modern societies, that is, in linguistic and cultural contact zones, such as England, Spain, the Holy Land, but also the New World. As all contributors confirm, the numerous cases of multilingualism discussed here indicate strongly that the premodern period knew considerably less barriers between people of different social classes, cultural background, and religious orientation. But we also have to acknowledge that already then human communication could fail because of linguistic hurdles which prevented mutual understanding in religious and cultural terms.

Though known as a site since 1903, El Mirón Cave in the Cantabrian Mountains of northern Spain remained unexcavated until a team from the universities of New Mexico and Cantabria began ongoing excavations in 1996. This large, deeply stratified cave allowed the team to apply cutting-edge techniques of excavation, recording, and multidisciplinary analysis in the meticulous study of a site that has become a new reference sequence for the classic Cantabrian region. The excavations uncovered the long history of human occupation of the cave, extending from the end of the Middle Paleolithic, through the Upper Paleolithic, up to the modern era. This volume comprehensively describes the background information on the setting, the site, the chronology, and the sedimentology. It then focuses on the biological and archaeological records of the Holocene levels pertaining to Mesolithic, Neolithic, Chalcolithic, and Bronze Age. Archaeologists, anthropologists, and historians will be drawn to this study and its extensive findings, dated by some seventy-five radiocarbon assays.

La ciencia prehistórica ha experimentado un notable auge en los últimos años al desprenderse de dogmatismos, variar sus intentos de conocimiento y abrirse a la multidisciplinariedad. Con este nuevo enfoque, la Península Ibérica ha visto aumentar notablemente su ámbito cronológico de estudio al descender la ocupación humana de la misma por debajo del millón de años. Paralelamente, la aparición de nuevos y espectaculares yacimientos arqueológicos, estudiados desde diversas y renovadas disciplinas, han enriquecido en cantidad y calidad las informaciones arqueológicas disponibles. Por estas razones, la Prehistoria del siglo XXI formula nuevas hipótesis para el mejor conocimiento de nuestros orígenes como europeos y para explicar la evolución biológica y cultural de las sociedades de cazadores recolectores de la Prehistoria Antigua (Paleolítico y Mesolítico). En este cambio del paradigma científico, la Península Ibérica ha jugado un papel fundamental, que pretendemos recoger en este manual universitario. La forma de enseñar y de aprender también ha cambiado en los últimos años con la aparición de los grados y el modelo de enseñanza del EEES. Este libro intenta, igualmente, adaptarse al mismo tratando de favorecer el estudio autónomo, los aspectos prácticos y la evaluación continua del estudiante. Al igual que la propia arqueología prehistórica hemos tratado de «humanizar» nuestra disciplina disminuyendo los aspectos descriptivos y potenciando las explicaciones sociales. Pensamos que con ello no solamente comprendemos mejor la dinámica que siguieron las sociedades humanas de la Península Ibérica a lo largo de un 99% de su historia, sino que creemos hacerlo también de una forma más amena y provechosa. Esperamos haberlo conseguido.
