This book explores the “battles” of words, songs, poetry, and performance in Africa and the African Diaspora. These are usually highly competitive, artistic contests in which rival parties duel for supremacy in poetry composition and/or its performance. This volume covers the history of this battle tradition, from its origins in Africa, especially the udje and halo of the Urhobo and Ewe respectively, to its transportation to the Americas and the Caribbean region during the Atlantic slave trade period, and its modern and contemporary manifestations as battle rap or other forms of popular music in Africa. Almost everywhere there are contemporary manifestations of the more traditional, older genres. The book is thus made up of studies of contests in which rivals duel for supremacy in verbal arts, song-poetry, and performance as they display their wit, sense of humor, and poetic expertise.

Originally published in 1969. Until the latter half of the nineteenth century, it was thought that England, alone among the European countries, and unlike Scotland and Ireland where collections of ballads and songs had already been published as early as the eighteenth century, had no important native tradition of music. The founding of the (English) Folk-Song Society in 1898, however, and the pioneering work of such collectors as Lucy Broadwood, the Reverend S. Baring-Gould and, later, Cecil Sharp uncovered a still flourishing folk culture. Since then interest in this subject has grown steadily, and the bibliography of publications of actual folk-songs and ballads is now huge. Frank Howes sets out a general and scholarly introduction, first examining in detail the history and origins of folk music and going on to show the nature and vast amount of the material, enforcing his arguments with a wealth of examples from around the world. His discussion of the differences of national idiom leads on to a comparison of British folk music with that of other European countries and America, in which he pays due attention to the Celtic and Norse traditions. Separate sections on balladry, carols, street cries, broadsides, sea shanties, nursery rhymes and instruments illustrate both the variety of folk music and the extent to which it permeates our national heritage.

Temos também buscado nos últimos anos prestigiar e divulgar a riquíssima obra da saudosa folclorista professora Lilian Argentina, cujo acervo pessoal somado ao que está nos arquivos do IGTF, trará incontáveis ganhos ao Movimento atual, abrindo um leque com inúmeras "novas" danças, até hoje desconhecidas do público tradicionalista. Todas as informações trarão um ganho importantíssimo para revivenciá-las no seio dos Centros de Tradições Gaúchas, entidades culturais, e demais sociedades recreativas, estudantis, bibliotecas, etc, para que se possa trazer à tona estes conhecimentos hoje "empoeirados" e um tanto quanto "secretos", podendo vivenciá-los novamente de forma espontânea como "novos" temas bailáveis, que outrora estiveram vigentes em nosso Rio Grande. A folclorista Lilian Argentina é a mentora mor das principais pesquisas folclóricas do IGTF, tendo ido a campo, revisado e catalogado quase todas as pesquisas que encontramos no MARS, juntamente com as outras bravas pesquisadoras Martly Schol, Rose Marie Reis Garcia e Sônia Campos. Isso merece todo nosso aplauso pois comprova que em pleno século passado, época de todo um preconceito, e até sentimento de machismo, notamos e comprovamos que também foram as mulheres peças fundamentais de todo um processo cultural enriquecedor, mas, infelizmente, o nome delas ficou de lado, por motivos ainda duvidosos, tendo toda a "fama" cultural em nosso Estado ficado apenas em nome dos homens pesquisadores de danças. Essa será uma oportunidade ímpar de, postumamente, prestarmos nossos agradecimentos a esta pioneira pesquisadora e folclorista gaúcha, Lilian Argentina, que também merece ser estudada pelas gerações futuras. Nosso objetivo maior como pesquisadores na área tradicionalista é que estes temas bailáveis voltem a ser divulgados pelos grupos de danças. Mas não só isso. Fundamentalmente, que retorne ao povo o que é do povo.
