Para el pueblo lo que es del pueblo, Marcha de la bronca, El pueblo unido jamás será vencido, A desalambrar o Hasta siempre son algunas de las muchas composiciones emblemáticas de un tiempo cantado, en el cual la canción, se creía, podía cambiar el mundo. Todos se sentían cómplices de lucha contra el arte conformista y compañeros de ruta en esa misteriosa conexión entre cantante y público. En Argentina, Atahualpa Yupanqui decía "Basta ya que el yanqui mande", Horacio Guarany pregonaba "un canto de obrero y popular", León Gieco le cantaba a los "hombres de hierro" y María Elena Walsh se burlaba de "los ejecutivos". Otros autores como Armando Tejada Gómez, José Tcherkaski, Moris, Pajarito Zaguri, Miguel Cantilo, Víctor Heredia, Héctor Negro, Ramón Ayala, Ariel Petrocelli y Jaime Dávalos también escribieron obras imprescindibles del cancionero social y político argentino. Intérpretes como Mercedes Sosa, Daniel Toro y Piero les pusieron sus voces. En Chile, surgían cantautores y grupos comprometidos como Violeta Parra, Víctor Jara, Rolando Alarcón, Patricio Manns y Quilapayún; en Uruguay, Alfredo Zitarrosa, Daniel Viglietti, Aníbal Sampayo y Los Olimareños; en Brasil, Geraldo Vandré y Chico Buarque; en México, Judith Reyes y Óscar Chávez; en Cuba, Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanés y Carlos Puebla; en Panamá, Rubén Blades; y en Venezuela, Alí Primera, entre tantos otros. Oche Califa se remonta a los orígenes de la canción popular; se zambulle en la modernidad, cuando el arte se impregnó de compromiso político, y llega a los años de procesos de liberación y revolución en el Tercer Mundo, en los que el poeta y el cantante se consideraron voz del pueblo. En Canto rebelde el autor recupera más de 70 de esas canciones fundamentales. Se podrá pensar que desarrollaron una estética y un discurso muy propio de esa época, sin embargo, algunas canciones se convirtieron en verdaderos clásicos que aún se cantan y numerosos creadores actuales, sean de folk, rock, rap o hip hop, siguen rescatando aquel espíritu. Porque mientras existan injusticias, las canciones de reclamos sociales siempre ocuparán un lugar en el escenario.
