Strong indeed must have been the lust of gold, and extreme the moral debasement that could tempt men to embark in such a career when seen in the light of this volume. Brantz Mayer (1809 - 1879) was a famous American author and edited for a short time the Baltimore American newspaper. In 1855, he published his book "Captain Canot; or, Twenty Years of an African Slaver" which is the true story of the slave trader Theodore Canot.
