Not a traditional Holocaust memoir, Alex Reifer's story will prove to be important for a better understanding of the era. Reifer was victimized by the Holocaust, losing his parents, grandparents and all four of his brothers. As a Russian intelligence officer he was able to take part in the liberation of his fellow Jews. Later he witnessed its aftermath. Reifer was born in 1921, growing up among the Bovever Hasidim in Oswiecim, Poland, the later location of Auschwitz-Birkenau. When the Nazis invaded, the entire Reifer family fled east. When it became physically too difficult, they returned to the town, except for Alex who was urged to continue. After finding work in a coal mine, Alex joined the Russian Army, rising in the ranks and serving until after the defeat of the Nazis. He took some comfort in telling captured German officers that he was a Jew and watching their fearful reaction. In Germany, he try to set up assistance for the survivors. Later, he returned to Oswiecim to find what had become of his family. Sadly, they had all been murdered. He visited the Death Camp at Auschwitz at time when almost nobody in the West had as yet seen its horrors. Returning to Germany, he planned a career in the Army, but began to realize it was not for him. He took off his uniform, made his way to Belgium and eventually to America.

Consists of two parts. "Father's Story" (pp. 13-137) contains an account of the experiences of Shmuel Reifer, an Orthodox Jew born in 1925 in Chrzanów, Poland. Describes the German occupation in 1939 and life in the ghetto. In February 1943 Reifer, his father, and his brother escaped from the ghetto, but were caught and sent to the labor camps of Blechhammer, Graeditz, Reichenbach, Faulbrück, Markstedt (where his father perished), Fünfteichen (where his brother remained, but survived), and Gerlitz, where Reifer was liberated. His mother and sisters perished in the Holocaust. also relates how his uncle, Simon Jeret, helped Oskar Schindler. After the war Reifer emigrated to England. "Mother's Story" (pp. 141-237) tells the story of Edith (Schattin) Reifer, born in 1927 in Sarospotok, Hungary. Describes the Hungarian anti-Jewish laws and her arrest and brief imprisonment by Hungarian police. In June 1944 she, her parents, and her brother were deported to Auschwitz, where her mother was killed; her father and brother also perished. Edith Reifer was sent to the Plaszow labor camp, to a camp near Leipzig, and then on a death march to Theresienstadt, where she was liberated. After the war she emigrated to England. Her account includes a diary (pp. 145-169) describing her experiences before the deportation.
