"[...] "I always heard that Reeves would never let money stand in his way," remarked Mr. Frazer. "There's one thing-he has a sound Concern behind him. Well, if you're going, you had better be off. You have money with you?" "About ten lire." "Then take other twenty. You may not require that amount, but it is best to be on the safe side." Bidding Mr. Frazer goodbye, the lads scampered off. At the quay they had no difficulty in finding a boat, for their appearance was hailed by a chorus of shouts from a score of watermen. "To the Victor Stroggia, as fast as you can," said Hugh, addressing an old man who seemed less importunate than the rest of his fellows. "Si, signor."[...]".

Horrors Of Slavery Or The American Tars In Tripoli written by William Ray and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Barbary pirates in Africa targeted sailors for centuries, often taking slaves and demanding ransom in exchange. First published in 1808, Horrors of Slavery is the tale of one such sailor, captured during the United States's first military encounter with the Islamic world, the Tripolitan War. William Ray, along with three hundred crewmates, spent nineteen months in captivity after his ship, the Philadelphia, ran aground in the harbor of Tripoli. Imprisoned, Ray witnessed-and chronicled-many of the key moments of the military engagement. In addition to offering a compelling history of a little-known war, this book presents the valuable perspective of an ordinary seaman who was as concerned with the injustices of the U.S. Navy as he was with Barbary pirates. Hester Blum's introduction situates Horrors of Slavery in its literary, historical, and political contexts, bringing to light a crucial episode in the early history of our country's relations with Islamic states. A volume in the Subterranean Lives series, edited by Bradford Verter

With Rommel In The Desert written by David Mitchelhill-Green and has been published by Casemate Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-04-30 with History categories.

This WWII pictorial history illustrates Nazi Germany’s North African campaign, showing life under Rommel through vivid wartime photographs. Prior to the outbreak of World War II, the German Army had focused exclusively on preparations needed to wage war in continental Europe. The threat of an Italian collapse in North Africa in early 1941, however, prompted Hitler to aid his ally by sending an armored blocking force to Libya. Not content to merely thwart the British from capturing Tripoli, Lieutenant-General Erwin Rommel harried his inexperienced expeditionary force eastward towards the Nile Delta. With Rommel in the Desert presents a pictorial narrative of the unfolding conflict from the arrival of the Deutsches Afrikakorps until Rommel's departure from the battlefield in March 1943. These rare wartime photographs show daily life in the desert war, with its shifting fortunes and unique challenges. Primarily viewed from the perspective of ordinary combatants, this is their personal record of serving with Rommel in the desert.

To The Shores Of Tripoli written by Jonathan Brazee and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-11 with categories.

The First Barbary War (1801-1805), or "America's First War on Terror," as some refer to it, was a pivotal moment in US history. While both the Navy and Marines participated in the Quasi-War with France, it was the war with the Barbary pirates that cemented both the Marine Corps and the Navy as the proud organizations that they are today. This was the war that produced heroes such as O'Bannon, Decatur, Preble, Porter, Hull, and Somers. To the Shores of Tripoli follows three fictional Marine privates as they participate in the watershed moments in the war. Private Seth Crocker is an uneducated, underage Marine who fights from the tops of the USS Enterprise and in battles such as the Gunboat Battle off the coast of Tripoli. Private Ichabod Cone, a veteran of the Revolution, is part of the crew of the USS Philadelphia when it is captured and spends most of the war as a slave of the pasha. Private Jacob Brissey is one of the seven Marines, under Lieutenant Presley O'Bannon, who march 600 miles across the desert against tremendous odds to attack and capture the city of Derne, where, for the first time in history, the US flag is raised over foreign soil. This book is historical fiction, but the events it describes are historical fact. Most of the characters actually existed and fought in the war. Where possible, their actual words are reproduced here. In all other cases, dialogue and characterizations were born in the author's imagination. The First Barbary War is considered the birth of the US Navy. It is equally valid to say that the war created the foundation for the Marine Corps as we know it today.

When Sarah Taylor suspected that her four-year-old daughter, Nadia, had been kidnapped by Fawzi, her abusive ex-husband, Sarah's whole world was turned upside down. Shadowy airport CCTV images showed Nadia had boarded a flight to Tripoli with her father, and Sarah's worst fears were confirmed. No child abducted to Libya had ever been successfully returned to their mother in England. But then Sarah Taylor was no ordinary mother. The only possibility of getting Nadia back was to give up everything that she held dear in England and move to Libya. But her journey wouldn't be easy. Nadia was moved secretly between Fawzi's relatives for two years in a desperate attempt to hide her until a dramatic car chase, through the backstreets of Tripoli, finally led to the safe reconciliation of this extraordinary mother and daughter. Sarah's quest to bring her beloved daughter is described in an unfolding story of blackmail and embezzlement, the involvement of the Libyan secret police, death threats, a meeting with Colonel Gadaffi and the intervention of Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The Counts Of Tripoli And Lebanon In The Twelfth Century written by Kevin James Lewis and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-04-21 with History categories.

The county of Tripoli in what is now North Lebanon is arguably the most neglected of the so-called ‘crusader states’ established in the Middle East at the beginning of the twelfth century. The present work is the first monograph on the county to be published in English, and the first in any western language since 1945. What little has been written on the subject previously has focused upon the European ancestry of the counts of Tripoli: a specifically Southern French heritage inherited from the famous crusader Raymond IV of Saint-Gilles. Kevin Lewis argues that past historians have at once exaggerated the political importance of the counts’ French descent and ignored the more compelling signs of its cultural impact, highlighting poetry composed by troubadours in Occitan at Tripoli’s court. For Lewis, however, even this belies a deeper understanding of the processes that shaped the county. What emerges is an intriguing portrait of the county in which its rulers struggled to exert their power over Lebanon in the face of this region’s insurmountable geographical forces and its sometimes bewildering, always beguiling diversity of religions, languages and cultures. The counts of Tripoli and contemporary Muslim onlookers certainly viewed the dynasty as sons of Saint-Gilles, but the county’s administration relied upon Arabic, its stability upon the mixed loyalties of its local inhabitants, and its very existence upon the rugged mountains that cradled it. This book challenges prevailing knowledge of this little-known crusader state and by extension the medieval Middle East as a whole. .
