Ziel des Buches ist die Erarbeitung und Nutzbarmachung von Datenbankkonzepten für sogenannte Non-Standard-Anwendungen. Darunter versteht man im Datenbankbereich Anwendungen aus den Gebieten CAD/CAM, VLSI-Entwurf, Software-Entwicklung, Büroautomatisierung, Expertensysteme etc. Ausgehend von vergleichenden Analysen verschiedener datenbankbasierter Prototypen aus diesen Anwendungsbereichen wird ein Anforderungskatalog als Leitlinie für den Entwurf von Non-Standard-Datenbanksystemen (NDBS) erstellt. Eine der wesentlichen Forderungen betrifft den Aspekt der Objektunterstützung. In dem hier vorgestellten Molekül-Atom-Datenbankmodell (MAD-Modell) wird er durch das Konzept der dynamischen Molekülbildung und -verarbeitung erfüllt. Anhand der Teilsprachen zur Daten- und Lastdefinition sowie zur Datenmanipulation wird die zum MAD-Modell gehörige Sprache MQL (molecule query language) definiert und durch Beispiele veranschaulicht. Zur präzisen Semantikdefinition in MQL dient eine Formalisierung des MAD-Modells in Form einer Molekülalgebra. Die sogenannte NDBS-Kern-Architektur wird als Rahmenarchitektur zur MAD-Implementierung in einem Prototypsystem verwendet. Es zeigt sich, daß das MAD-Modell mit seiner deskriptiven Spezifikation dynamisch aggregierter Objekte neue Aufgaben bzgl. der Objektabbildung und -verarbeitung stellt, der die Anwendung neuer Konzepte bei seiner Implementierung entspricht. Am zugrundeliegenden Prototyp werden die verwendeten Implementierungkonzepte aufgezeigt und erläutert.
