Academic Paper from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 7.8, University of Amsterdam, course: Business Administration, language: English, abstract: This paper will attempt to answer the following question: "How has Turo's peer-topeer car sharing platform effectively contributed to the sharing economy by putting underutilized vehicles to better use?." The answer to this question will make it clear whether Turo's platform positively contributes to the sharing economy. A literature review will be used to answer this question, which consists of academic articles on peer-to-peer platforms, car sharing and Turo's activity in multiple markets. This material is reinforced with data, analytics and reviews from the platform. Turo, a peer-to-peer platform, enables its users to rent the exact car that is advertised and costing 35% less than traditional agency prices on average. On the other side, it allows car owners to rent out their under-utilized car on the platform. Founded in 2009 in San Francisco, California - Turo has since become active in more than 4500 cities spread across 3 countries and now employs 110 people. The providers on the platform also cover over 300 airports, providing a solid alternative for regular rental car agencies. Armed with its mission "to put the world's one billion cars to better use," the firm generates revenue with every car rental booked through the platform. Even though Turo has not yet reached profitability, it has raised more than $172m in venture capital and acquired two firms to expand its operations internationally. Turo was also named amongst Uber and WeWork in the Forbes 15 hottest on-demand startups of 2015.

Jens Kopp analyzes the potential of car sharing as a new mobility solution in light of progressive urbanization and researches factors influencing the use of car sharing to assess the growth outlook of car sharing services. He performs a regression analysis to identify statistically significant factors influencing the use and evaluation of car sharing services based on an empirical field research conducted in Germany (n=175). Key findings include that cost saving is the only researched factor relevant to influence the use of car sharing services as well as the evaluation of car sharing and the assessment of its future. The existing research shows that car sharing is a viable lever to address substantial ecological and economic mobility issues and the conducted research provides new insights into the factors influencing the use and evaluation of car sharing services.

Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 2,0, University of Applied Sciences Essen, language: English, abstract: Car sharing in 2021 is no longer a new invention, but rather part of the social shift toward a sustainable world. It is the breaking down of old values of owning a car as a status symbol. Thus, car sharing (CS) has its origins in 1997, when the cooperatives ATG AutoTeilet Genossenschaft and ShareCom merged to form the swiss Mobility Genossenschaft, bringing together the first thoughts on car sharing. The intention was to make it possible for all people to use a car, especially those who cannot bear the high costs of purchasing and maintaining one. Now, a lot has happened in the project for over 20 years, with the last 10 years in particular bringing a great surge in development. Digitization and the progress of technologies have managed to generate a wide reach and market the sharing model as a worthwhile business model. Worthwhile for companies and users alike, who can now reserve and use a car close to them with little money and pay for it for a leisure trip, a trip to the supermarket or a commute to work only as long as it is in use. The automotive industry, meanwhile, is delighted about the growing middle class, which nowadays can afford its own car without major restrictions and also wants to. Cars mean the greatest possible mobility, freedom for people. Although this is a basic human need, awareness of sustainability and climate protection has increased. As a result, the automotive industry is currently under unprecedented pressure to transform its technologies to electric drives and to decide on its own market position in a future-oriented manner, to be a mobility service provider or a pure vehicle manufacturer. At the present time, CS is largely offered by companies that mediate supply and demand and thus connect users with automobiles. BMW and Daimler, which have been mobility service providers and CS suppliers for several years, can be named as an exception here. However, since several people now share a car, it is reasonable to assume that the sales of automotive suppliers will decline - provided that CS continues to gain acceptance and experiences exponential growth in the following years. What exactly CS is and if, respectively which effects the automotive industry will experience due to CS, will be examined in more detail in this thesis.

This book examines electric car sharing in cities from a variety of perspectives, from service design to simulation, from mathematical modeling to technology deployment, and from energy use improvement to the integration of different kinds of vehicle. The contents reflect the outcomes of the Green Move project, undertaken by Politecnico di Milano with the aim of fostering an innovative and easily accessible electric vehicle sharing system. The first section of the book illustrates the car sharing service, covering service design, the configuration of the vehicle sharing model and the Milan mobility pattern, analysis of local demand and supply, testing of the condominium-based car sharing model, and communication design for social engagement. The second section then explains the technological choices, from the architecture of the system and dynamic applications to information management, the smartphone-based energy-oriented driving assistance system, automatic fleet balancing systems, and real-time monitoring of vehicle positions. In the final section, readers will find descriptions of the simulation model, a model to estimate potential users of the service, and a model for a full-scale electric car sharing service in Milan.

Carsharing Services A Potential Analysis Of Alternative Business Models In The Automotive Industry written by Christian Acht and has been published by GRIN Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-18 with Business & Economics categories.

Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, University of Marburg (Research Group Technology and Innovation Management), course: Tutorial, language: English, abstract: Carsharing is rapidly growing service that gains more and more acceptance among car drivers. By now, alternative business models exist in search of new customers. This term paper aims to evaluate the potential of alternative carsharing business models in the automotive industry. Therefore, it will first set theoretical foundations by introducing different forms of carsharing and business model concepts. In a second step, dominant forms will be exemplified by applying it to a business model framework. In a last step, the author will make use of a SWOT analysis to examine potentials of each carsharing business model. This paper will exclusively concentrate on business-to-customer carsharing services on the German market. Other forms of the shared mobility will not be considered. Carsharing is a special form of the so-called access based consumption. It refers to transactions that are market mediated but without transfer of property. The term carsharing (or short-term auto use) describes a principle where individuals gain advantage from private car use without the costs and commitments of ownership. Core char-acteristics are a short rental period, simple access to vehicles and good transition to other forms of mobility. This way of utilization is applicable for intermediate travel and routine activities. Even though carsharing emerged in Europe between the 1940s and 1980s, it ultimately became popular in the 1990s. Since then, it is spreading and growing all over the continent. Among others, one crucial factor for this development is that by 2020 55 per cent of the world population is expected to live in cities, which will lead to considerable space, infrastructure and environmental problems. Thus, the possession of a private car becomes more and more unattractive as overstrained infrastructures make a smooth flow of traffic impossible. Carsharing has to be distinguished from other types of shared mobility solutions like ride sharing concepts such as Uber, which are not treated in this paper.

Blockchain A Key Technology On The Way To Private Car Rental written by Michael Mauß and has been published by GRIN Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-10-19 with Business & Economics categories.

Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject Computer Sciences - Cryptocurrency, grade: 1,3, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), language: English, abstract: This paper explores whether Blockchain could be a key technology on the way to private car rental. After the problem statement and the situation assessment, there is an in- troduction to the blockchain itself and specifically. After that, the recommendations – for im- proving car sharing nowadays with private car rental over the blockchain – will be discussed with a view to the implementation and the solved problem. In the end, we will have a look into the near future and at the next steps that need to be done for the realization of the idea. In the current climate crisis, the target in the western world is to reduce the amount of fossil energy and raw materials. Every less produced car is, therefore, a step in the right direction to a more sustainable future. According to the Federal Environment Agency of Germany, one car-sharing car could replace four to ten private cars. Today's carsharing vehicles are newer on average and therefore have lower fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions than the average private car. In addition, car-sharing users often combine car-sharing journeys with public transport, so that utilization there increases and no additional fuel is consumed. Be- sides that, they also use bicycles more often or go by foot, instead of driving a car. In the future, the streets should be used less, the more car-sharing users there are, and the emission- neutral traffic routes such as cycle paths will have better utilization. Besides these positive aspects, car sharing today has many issues to deal with. Low customer numbers and problems with profitability come together with availability only in the city center and a not completely satisfying service. For solving these problems private car rental over blockchain could be an alternative.

Dr. Bodo Schwieger describes the implementation and evaluation of an innovative service: One-Way and Open-End Car-Sharing. A field test offered gasoline vehicles in a One-Way rental scheme within an urban environment: 25 Smart vehicles were based at 8 stations and available to 4,000 car-sharing customers. This service is being analyzed for efficiency and customer reactions. In a second step, other car-sharing companies in Hamburg (Germany), Seattle (Washington), Kyoto and Tokyo (Japan) are analyzed for their approaches to improving their services. Car-sharing has recently become a highly relevant topic with the fast expansion of major providers such as car2go, DriveNow and Quicar. The author applies the methods of "service engineering." This approach combines technological competence, marketing know-how and customer analysis. This book delivers densely accumulated information for anyone who is involved in introducing and developing new services, either within transportation or related branches. The book is based on the author's dissertation at the Technical University of Berlin.
