Marcus Aurelius, einer der bekanntesten römischen Kaiser (161-180), wird häufig als "Philosophenkaiser" eingestuft. Das philosophische Werk des Kaisers, die "Selbstbetrachtungen", zählt zweifellos zur Weltliteratur, doch erfuhr es keine systematische Bearbeitung. Daher gilt es die historische Bedeutung dieses Herrschers an seinen politischen Erfolgen zu messen, nicht jedoch an seinen stoisch geprägten philosophischen Gedanken. Diese Einschätzung sucht das Buch zu verdeutlichen.
