The second international symposium on Pectins and Pectinases was organised by Wageningen University and Research Centre and was held in Rotterdam, May 6-10, 2001. This fruitful meeting was attended by around 130 participants from more than 20 countries, representing almost all of the groups/industries working worldwide on pectins and pectinases. Following the first meeting on this subject held in December 1995, the symposium definitely forms a platform for researchers and industries working in the field, all within their own discipline and expertise. The symposium book contains most keynote lectures and other oral presentations and provides an update about the current research. It is clearly demonstrated that significant progress has been made during the past seven years. The progress in the elucidation of the chemical structure of pectin and mode of action and 3-D structure of the pectin-degrading enzymes allows us more and more to identify (and influence) the functionality of pectins and pectic enzymes, both in vitro after isolation as well as in the plants themselves (in planta). Other contributions deal with new applications of both pectin and pectin-degrading enzymes, while more and more attention is paid to health and nutritional aspects of pectins.

The Sixth International Congress on Photosynthesis took place from 1 to 6 August 1983, on the Campus of the "Vrije Universiteit Brussel", in Brussels, Belgium. These Proceedings contain most of the scientific contributions offered during the Congress. The Brussels Congress was the largest thus far held in the series of International Congresses on Photosynthesis. It counted over 1100 active participants. The organizers tried to minimize the disadvantages of such a large size by making maximum use of the facili ties available on a university campus. Most contributions were offered in the form of posters which were displayed in a substantial number of classrooms. The discussion sessions, twice a day, four or five in parallel, took place in lecture rooms in the very vicinity of these classrooms. In this way it was attempted to generate the atmosphere of a small meeting. The unity of the subject Photosynthesis was preserved in the ten plenary lectures, organ1sed in such a way that a general overview of two diverse topics was given every day. In addition, there were the five times four parallel symposia dealing with some six teen general topics. Every editor of proceedings of a congress is faced with the problem of editing and arranging the contributions, a problem compounded by the wide diversity and the large number of the 753 manuscripts.

Recent Progress in Hormone Research, Volume 41 covers the proceedings of a Laurentian Hormone Conference held in late August 1984 at the Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia. The book presents papers on the hormone-receptor interactions; the biosynthesis, secretion, metabolism, and mechanism of action of the steroid hormones; and the mechanisms of action of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and TRH. The text also includes papers on the molecular characterization of a brain specific mRNA; and the factors affecting changes in frequency and amplitude of GnRH pulses and the resulting functional consequences in various mammals including humans with disorders of fertility. Papers on the biological heritage of mammalian endocrinology, such as the actions of urotensin I in mammals and fishes; and the clinical implications of the glycosylation and posttranslational processing of the TSH are also encompassed. Endocrinologists, neuroscientists, biochemists, biophysicists, and scientists involved in hormone research will find the book invaluable.

Recent Advances In Geomicrobiology Of The Ocean Crust written by Beth N. Orcutt and has been published by Frontiers Media SA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-29 with categories.

Igneous oceanic crust is one of the largest potential habitats for life on earth, and microbial activity supported by rock-water-microbe reactions in this environment can impact global biogeochemical cycles. However, our understanding of the microbiology of this system, especially the subsurface “deep biosphere” component of it, has traditionally been limited by sample availability and quality. Over the past decade, several major international programs (such as the Center for Dark Energy Biosphere Investigations, the current International Ocean Discovery Program and its predecessor Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, and the Deep Carbon Observatory) have focused on advancing our understanding of life in this cryptic, yet globally relevant, biosphere. Additionally, many field and laboratory research programs are examining hydrothermal vent systems –a seafloor expression of seawater that has been thermally and chemically altered in subseafloor crust – and the microbial communities supported by these mineral-rich fluids. The Frontiers in Microbiology 3 September 2017 | Recent Advances in Geomicrobiology of the Ocean Crust papers in this special issue bring together recent discoveries of microbial presence, diversity and activity in these dynamic ocean environments. Cumulatively, the articles in this special issue serve as a tribute to the late Dr. Katrina J. Edwards, who was a pioneer and profound champion of studying microbes that “rust the crust”. This special issue volume serves as a foundation for the continued exploration of the subsurface ocean crust deep biosphere.

Advances in Postharvest Fruit and Vegetable Technology examines how changes in community attitudes and associated pressures on industry are demanding changes in the way technology is used to minimize postharvest loss and maintain product quality. In particular, the book discusses important drivers for change, including: Using more natural chemicals or physical treatments to replace synthetic chemicals Increasing the efficiency of older, more traditional methods in combination with newer biocontrol treatments Leveraging a range of biomolecular research tools or "omics" to efficiently gather and assess mass information at molecular, enzymic, and genetic levels Using modelling systems to identify key changes and control points for better targeting of new treatments and solutions to postharvest problems The postharvest handling of fresh fruits and vegetables plays a critical role in facilitating a continuous supply of high-quality fresh produce to the consumer. Many new technologies developed and refined in recent years continue to make possible an ever-expanding supply of fresh products. This volume examines a range of recently developed technologies and systems that will help the horticulture industry to become more environmentally sustainable and economically competitive, and to minimize postharvest quality loss and generate products that are appealing and acceptable to consumers.
