Paediatric care has changed dramatically in the last few years and this has affected the care and management of ophthalmic patients. Babies and children with ophthalmic problems are often cared for by registered children’s nurses in specialist children’s hospitals. However, some of these nurses may lack the required ophthalmic knowledge and expertise. Likewise, paediatric patients are also often cared for in ophthalmic environments, where the ophthalmic nurses don’t necessarily possess the same level of paediatric knowledge as their colleagues in children’s hospitals. This useful, comprehensive book bridges the gap, presenting the core information required by both groups: paediatric nurses who care for ophthalmic patients, and ophthalmic nurses who look after children in their practice. Contents include: • Working with the child and their family • Development of the eye and vision • Gross anatomy and physiology of the eye and adnexa • Assessment of vision and eye movement • Examination of the eye and adnexa • Eye conditions, inherited and acquired • Eye emergencies • Eye drops and ointment • Statutory and voluntary support for visually impaired children and their families • Glossary of terms

As students pursuing a career in ophthalmology, it is crucial to recognize the significance of pediatric vision care. The early years of a child's life are critical for visual development and any potential vision problems must be detected and addressed promptly. This subchapter aims to shed light on why pediatric vision care is of utmost importance. First and foremost, it is essential to understand that children rely heavily on their vision to learn and navigate the world around them. Approximately 80% of a child's learning occurs through visual input, making clear and healthy vision crucial for their educational success. Undetected vision problems can lead to difficulties in reading, writing, and overall academic performance. By providing comprehensive vision care to children, we can help them reach their full potential and excel in their studies. Furthermore, pediatric vision care plays a vital role in identifying and treating eye conditions that, if left untreated, could result in permanent vision loss. Conditions such as amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (crossed eyes), and refractive errors can be effectively treated if detected early. Regular eye exams for children ensure that these conditions are caught in their infancy, enabling timely intervention and preventing long-term visual impairments. Another crucial aspect of pediatric vision care is the detection of systemic diseases with ocular manifestations. Some systemic diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension, can have a significant impact on a child's vision. By regularly examining a child's eyes, ophthalmologists can identify early signs of these diseases and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care. In addition to the prevention and treatment of vision problems, pediatric vision care also contributes to the overall health and well-being of children. Eye exams can uncover issues like poor eye coordination, focusing difficulties, and visual perception problems, which may hinder a child's motor skills and overall development. By addressing these issues early on, we can ensure that children grow up with healthy eyesight and the ability to fully engage in physical activities and social interactions.

Written by an international team of ophthalmic practitioners, this authoritative book is a vital resource not only for ophthalmic professionals, but for any healthcare professional who cares for patients with eye problems. In the ten years since the first edition was published, practice has moved on, as has the evidence for practice. This second edition draws on the passion and goodwill of the original team of authors, complemented by other colleagues, to fully revise and update the text in line with new findings, new practice and new and exciting treatments. The book is broadly divided into three sections. The first section considers the structure and function of the eye, as well as the basic principles of ophthalmology and eye examination. The second section considers patient care in diverse settings, as well as work-related issues and patient education. It also includes two entirely new chapters on eye banking and global eye health. The third section takes a systematic approach to patient care, working from the front to the back of the eye, discussing some of the common disorders affecting each structure (such as the lens or cornea) or group of structures (such as the eyelids or lacrimal drainage system). The book concludes with a very useful glossary of ophthalmic terms. Some aspects of practice discussed in the text are, of necessity, UK based, but these are clearly indicated and, wherever possible, principles (rather than specifics) are addressed and readers are directed to local policies and interpretations. The first edition of this book became a core text for ophthalmic nursing, in particular, and for the education of ophthalmic nurses across the world. This new edition will provide a comprehensive, up-to-date, evidence-based resource for all ophthalmic healthcare professionals. Contents include: • Physiology of vision • Optics • Pharmacology • Examination of the eye • Visual impairment • Patient education • Work and the eye • Care of the adult ophthalmic patient in an inpatient setting • The care of the child undergoing ophthalmic treatment • Developments in day care surgery for ophthalmic patients • Ophthalmic theatre nursing • The care of patients presenting with acute problems • Eye banking • Global eye health • The eyelids and lacrimal drainage system • The conjunctiva • The cornea • The sclera • The lens • The uveal tract • The angle and aqueous • The retina and vitreous • The orbit and extraocular muscles • Visual and pupillary pathways and neuro-ophthalmology • The eye and systemic disease

A Child S Eyes written by John Willard Simon and has been published by Triad Publishing Company (FL) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Medical categories.

HEALTH This book by two academic ophthalmologists specializing in pediatric ophthalmology is aimed at an important and unique dual readership: parents and nonophthalmologist physicians, pediatricians, and family practice specialists. The text describes in detail the specific tests of visual function most often used in diagnosing children's eye conditions. Also covered are the full range of common eye problems as well as many rarely occurring diseases or conditions. The writing is straightforward but not overly simplified, and the illustrations are an appropriate mix of photographs and sketches. The only weak point is the book's coverage of genetic eye diseases: for example, Leber's congenital amaurosis is given two paragraphs, while Usher syndrome and juvenile retinoschisis are not mentioned. Collections with frequent queries concerning genetic diseases may want to supplement this text with Saul Merin's Inherited Eye Diseases (Dekker, 1991). Still, this volume is highly recommended for all public and hospital patient education collections.
