The scholar analyzes the diverse relations between the Spanish-speaking part of the Caribbean region, including the islands and surrounding coasts of the continent, with European countries during the last two centuries. Interesting topics include the participation of Central-Europeans in the slave trade, the French attempt to build a canal in Central America before the beginning of the Panama adventure and Czechoslovak diplomatic activities in Central America in the 1920s and 1930s.

Havana is a city that has been important for the entire Atlantic world since the early 16th century. During the colonial period, it was an American terminal on the „route” connecting the Old and New worlds. In the 19th century it became one of the most important centers of the global sugar trade, while in the latter part of the 20th century, Fidel Castro wanted to make Havana a stronghold of the world revolution. Havana was not only a political and economic base, but also a city with flourishing culture. This book was been published on the occasion of the 500 year anniversary of the foundation of the first settlement, offering diverse views of the history of the city. The contributions were written by experts from American and European countries, including Allan Kuethe, José Antonio Piqueras, Françoise Moulin Civil and Miguel Ángel Puig-Samper.

Tři desítky autorů z Argentiny, Francie, Kolumbie, Kuby, Maďarska, Mexika, Španělska a České republiky představují významné historiky, kteří se zabývali dějinami Karibské oblasti, jejich pracovní metody a hlavní oblasti výzkumu (srov. např. texty José Antonia Piquerase o H. E. Friedlaenderovi nebo Paula Estrade o pařížském pobytu mladého Julia LeRiverenda), popřípadě analyzují historickou produkci věnovanou dějinám regionu jednotlivými národními historiografiemi (studie Adáma Anderle o kubánských studiích v Maďarsku). Alejandro Carpentier, či obrazem reality regionu v textech místních publicistů, spisovatelů a básníků.

Given that strong asymmetrical dependencies have shaped human societies throughout history, this kind of social relation has also left its traces in many types of texts. Using written and oral narratives in attempts to reconstruct the history of asymmetrical dependency comes along with various methodological challenges, as the 15 articles in this interdisciplinary volume illustrate. They focus on a wide range of different (factual and fictional) text types, including inscriptions from Egyptian tombs, biblical stories, novels from antiquity, the Middle High German Rolandslied, Ottoman court records, captivity narratives, travelogues, the American gift book The Liberty Bell, and oral narratives by Caribbean Hindu women. Most of the texts discussed in this volume have so far received comparatively little attention in slavery and dependency studies. The volume thus also seeks to broaden the archive of texts that are deemed relevant in research on the histories of asymmetrical dependencies, bringing together perspectives from disciplines such as Egyptology, theology, literary studies, history, and anthropology

The relationship between Central Europe and Latin America further strengthened in the period between the wars. New possibilities for profitable economic cooperation opened up particularly for Czechoslovakia as Latin America became an important market for industrial products, while at the same time being a supplier of raw materials for Czechoslovak industry. The scholars describe these developing economic and other relationships emphasizing those with Argentina, which was the most prominent trade partner in the region for Czechoslovak exporters and importers in the interwar period. They also focus on the political area (e.g., activities of Mexico) and explore the image of Latin America in the travelogues written by Czech authors.
