Many view this as a sign that Catholicism’s primacy in the region is at last beginning to wane. Overlooked by journalists and scholars has been the parallel growth of Charismatic, or Pentecostal, Catholicism in the region. Edward Cleary offers the first comprehensive treatment of this movement, revealing its importance to the Catholic Church as well as the people of Latin America. Catholic Charismatics have grown worldwide to several hundred million, among whom Latin Americans number approximately 73 million participants. These individuals are helping the church become more extroverted by drawing many into evangelizing and mission work. The movement has rapidly acquired an indigenous Latin American character and is now returning to the United States through migration and is affecting Catholicism in the United States. Cleary has witnessed firsthand the birth and maturing of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in Latin America as both a social scientist and a Dominican missionary. Drawing upon important findings of Latin American scholars and researchers, he explores and analyzes the origins of the most important Catholic movement in Latin America and its notable expansion to all countries of the region, bringing with it unusual vitality and notable controversy about its practices. O livro "Carisma e poder no discurso político" resulta de um sério engajamento acadêmico de Rudney Soares, durante o período de seu doutoramento em Língua Portuguesa na PUC-SP, quando investigou a ação política, particularmente, em discursos político-eleitorais midiatizados, com base no campo linguístico-discursivo. Embora feitas pequenas adequações, o livro não altera nem o percurso investigativo feito por Soares, nem a interpretação do corpus selecionado; assim, os resultados comprobatórios da tese levantada ficaram registrados aqui na obra que ele coloca a público. Carisma e poder no discurso político traz reflexões relevantes para os campos da Linguística e da Política, embora não escape ao autor mencionar outras disciplinas que abordam, também, o objeto política, sem esgotar esse fenômeno É necessário enfatizar, também, a coragem de Soares em colocar em análise discursos políticos, midiatizados e polêmicos, proferidos por Aécio Neves e Dilma Rousseff, no segundo turno das eleições presidenciais de 2014. Com isso, a investigação materializada revela que o discurso político dos presidenciáveis evidencia que o carisma aparece como traço constitutivo da identidade do sujeito político, situando-o entre a vontade de mudança do status quo e sua projeção como executor. De forma geral, o político brasileiro, num jogo de aparência e de sedução, busca legitimar seu poder na mídia e nas urnas, a fim de firmar seu carisma. Sem dúvida, a ideia de analisar os discursos de presidenciáveis revela aspecto relevante das competições partidárias e aponta o modo como o sujeito político utiliza em seu discurso uma máscara para esconder suas condições reais de existência.

O abuso do poder religioso nas eleições não está vinculado necessariamente à fé. Há quem afirme tratar-se de um neocoronelismo em alusão à tese enfrentada pelo saudoso Ministro Victor Nunes Leal, quando ele explicitava haver uma forma hegemônica de instituição privada a instalar-se na política com manifesto domínio econômico. O abuso do poder religioso só passa a ser abusivo quando estabelece uma forma de composição fisiológica de certas instituições religiosas e não da religião no processo democrático das eleições, impondo certas dissimulações do discurso religioso entrosado à ideia de desenvolvimento econômico, poder político, cuja predominância ideológica de grupos majoritários e autointeresses econômicos são consequências desse projeto político. O livro Política e Fé: o abuso do poder religioso eleitoral no Brasil observa os limites materiais constitucionais que devem ser levados em consideração para a compreensão do fenômeno com atenção pela justiça eleitoral, não pela forma religiosa em si, cuja liberdade goza no Estado Democrático de Direito, porém, pela forma discrepante que chancela uma espécie de abuso ideológico e econômico na lisura das eleições.

This book demonstrates that Latin American liberation theology continues to produce substantial biblical exegesis, absorbing theological reflection, and a sharp social critique that enhances the worldwide church. In Jesus Goes to McDonald's, Rossi asserts that the book of Job protests against the devastating effects of imperial Persian rule in postexilic Judah--effects seen as the stimulus for the theology of reward so severely criticized by Job. Not since Gustavo Gutierrez's On Job has there been such a compelling reading of the book of Job as a literary mirror of oppressive socioeconomic and political conditions. Rossi uses Job to offer a critique of the prosperity theology that is so dominant in parts of the church today. The second half of the book offers a radical critique of "the McDonaldization" of society and church. Free market capitalism has become an all-embracing worldview to the detriment of society and church. As counter-speech, Rossi proposes a theology that favors life, a life in which solidarity with the poor is central.
