Men Edvard Matz vill visa en annan bild av vår store poet: Carl Michael Bellman (1740–1795) var en utpräglad sällskapsmänniska. Han föddes i en högborgerlig miljö som även utgjorde hans umgängeskrets. Trots hans bakgrund nämns dessa personer knappt i litteraturen om Bellman, även om det var för dem han framförde sina visor. Edvard Matz har i den Bellmaniana som finns hittat en del av Bellmans manliga vänner. Det han berättar om kvinnorna härrör främst från Bellmans egna skildringar Dikter till enskilda där de är i detalj beskrivna. Med detta annorlunda grepp får vi en ny och mer nyanserad bild av vår nationalpoet, av kvinnorna i hans sällskap och, inte minst, av det dåtida Stockholm.
