Esta obra de Gabriel Maura Gamazo, que ahora es objeto de una coedición facsímil entre el BOE y la Real Academia de la Historia, fue publicada en 1911 (volumen I) y 1915 (volumen II), con 28 ilustraciones. El texto manejado proviene de la biblioteca de la Real Academia de la Historia y, sin lugar a dudas, su autor, hijo de don Antonio Maura, es uno de los máximos especialistas en el reinado del último de los Austria en la primera mitad del siglo XX. La obra engloba el período de la minoridad de Carlos II hasta 1675, así como el valimiento de don Juan José de Austria entre 1677-1679. Fue propósito del autor continuar con la ingente tarea hasta el advenimiento de los Borbones en 1700, pero el estallido de la primera guerra mundial provocó la clausura de los archivos reales e imperiales de Europa central, con lo que la visión íntegra del reinado sólo la podría elaborar después de la Guerra Civil Española, en condiciones adversas, en Vida y Reinado de Carlos II. A pesar de que el enfoque del autor ha sido superado en algunos aspectos por la actual escuela de historiadores españoles, la obra de Maura sigue siendo apasionante al mostrar, por un lado, los avatares de la crisis del Imperio español, las luchas de poder de las élites a la muerte de Felipe IV y durante la regencia de Mariana de Austria, los papeles que tuvieron en aquella Nithard y Fernando Valenzuela, la oposición de los grandes a sus valimientos, el papel desempeñado por el bastardo de Felipe IV, don Juan José de Austria, la incidencia de la paz de Nimega y del imperialismo de Luis XIV y la pompa de la rigurosa etiqueta cortesana, permitiendo al lector tener una visión de la vida interior del Real Alcázar de Madrid. Sirve de inestimable apoyo para entender el alcance de la obra el prólogo del reconocido historiador Luis Ribot y los índices de lugares, personas y autores de Rocío Martínez López.

Unlike empresses in Germany and queens in England and France, the lives and political careers of most Iberian queens remain largely unknown to non-specialists. In this collection, Theresa Earenfight brings together new research on medieval and early modern Spanish queens that highlights the distinctive political culture that resulted in forms of queenship similar to, yet also substantially different from, that of northern Europe. The essays consider three aspects of queenship and politics: the institutional foundations and practice of politics, the politics of religion and religious devotion, and the literary and artistic representations of queenship and power. Late medieval queens, because they often occupied prominent and powerful offices such as the regency in Castile and Portugal and the Lieutenancy in the Crown of Aragon, exemplify a unique form of queenship that can best be described as a political partnership. Habsburg queens and empresses, often excluded from such official political roles, were less publicly visible but their power as partner to the king, although shrouded, remains potent. Their political careers were the result of two forces: first, military circumstances brought about by territorial expansion, conquest, and second, a political culture that did not explicitly prohibit queens from active participation in the governance of the realm. The essays in this collection-by both newer and well established scholars-demonstrate the range and depth of current research on Iberian queenship, and prompt a re-examination of long-held assumptions about women and the exercise of power in pre-modern Spain.
