SINOPSE “CRIE FAMA E DEITE NA CAMA”. Este ditado popular caiu como uma luva nessa história, que é passada em uma cidadela qualquer de um interior atrasado na região nordestina. Conta a história da Senhora Carmem, uma mulher rezadeira e santificada pelo marido (CORONEL FONSÊCA), por ser uma dama fiel do São Cristóvão da Coroa Grande, padroeiro da cidade e que o povo demonstra sua fé em forma de fanatismo e muita devoção. O fanatismo dessa gente é tão grande, que eles têm o padre também como santo e acredita o povo, que o vigário é mensageiro direto do santo em carne e osso, fazendo assim promessa para o padre e não para o santo. A senhora Carmem, de santa, ela não tem nada. Na realidade não passa de uma mundana caliente que transa com todo tipo de gato e cachorro que aparecer na sua frente e por causa desse seu fogo na hora da transa, deixa marcada nas costas do infeliz que com ela transar as marcas de suas enormes e belas unhas. A confusão toda começa, quando a população descobre que o santo padre também está com as costas arranhadas, causando assim revolta geral na cidade. Aí é onde o povo mostra a força de seu fanatismo pelo santo padroeiro. O padre, segundo a população cometeu um ato escabroso diante do santo que ele era considerado mensageiro direto e por causa disso a população não perdoou. Segundo eles, a sentença do padre seria a morte e pendurou numa árvore em praça pública uma corda para enforca-lo. Mas o padre depois de muito corre-corre pela solitárias ruas da cidade e driblando o povo, consegue fugir daquele trágico momento; mas, a Senhora Carmem, por ser a famosa mulher que costuma arranhar as costas dos homens da cidade, recebeu também a sua sentença de morte. Arrependida do que fez e jurando por tudo que não foi ela quem arranhou as costas do padre, a senhora Carmem em prantos, corta suas belas unhas com uma tesoura e jura para o marido traído (Coronel Fonseca), que nunca mais irá fazer aquele tipo de façanha. Dando uma transição de personalidade, o Coronel fica anestesiado com a descoberta. Jamais passaria pela sua cabeça que a mulher que ele tinha como santa, não passava de um mundana da pior qualidade que uma cidade pudesse ter. Friamente, ele deixa que o povo faça vingança com as próprias mãos. A senhora Carmem se entrega de corpo aberto ao povo, a qual é levada para a forca no lugar do padre, já que o povo não conseguiu pega-lo. A senhora Carmem morre. Seu enterro é em rede como em alguns interiores paupérrimos. Com o passar do tempo, o padre fugido, manda um amigo trajado de bispo para ver como se encontra a cidade e saber notícias, que até então o padre não estava sabendo o que foi que aconteceu. O falso bispo procura a casa do Coronel Fonseca, o qual conta toda a história. Ele vê em uma cristaleira, as unhas da Senhora Carmem depositadas em um depósito de vidro. O coronel Fonseca diz que foi a Geninha que resolveu guardar de lembrança. O falso bispo, se trata de um vigarista, que ao ver as unhas da senhora Carmem, lança a ideia de transforma-la numa santa, causando espanto no coronel Fonseca. A idéia, é de espalhar na cidade que a senhora Carmem fez milagre. As unhas se desprenderam de suas mãos embaixo da cova e ficaram cravadas, expostas em terra em cima da cova. O Coronel Fonseca viaja também no assunto, visando ganhar muito dinheiro em cima do caso. O prefeito da cidade, afim de sua reeleição manda imediatamente construir um monumento para ser exposto em praça pública em homenagem à santa Senhora Carmem, onde neste monumento, é depositado os restos mortais da santa. A cidade passa a ser visitada por turistas e o dinheiro começa a entrar. O povo é convencido à adorar o santo padre, por ele ser o primeiro padre à ter as costas arranhadas por uma santa.
