Since restrictions on commonwealth labour immigration to Britain in the 1960s, marriage has been the dominant form of migration between Pakistan and the UK. Most transnational Pakistani marriages are between cousins or other more distant relatives, lending a particular texture to this transnational social field. Based on research in Britain and Pakistan, this book provides a rounded portrayal incorporating the emotional motivations for, and content of, these transnational unions. The book explores the experiences of families and individuals involved, including the neglected experiences of migrant husbands, and charts the management of the risks of contracting transnational marriages, as well as examining the consequences in cases when marriages run into conflict. Equally, however, the book explores the attractions of marrying ‘back home’, and the role of transnational marriage in maintaining bonds between people and places. Marriage emerges as a crucial, but dynamic and contested, element of Pakistani transnational connections. This book is of interest to students and scholars in the fields of migration studies, kinship/the family and South Asian studies, as well as social work, family law and immigration.

This project examines the shared cultural heritage of African and Irish people commencing with the era of slavery and indentured servitude, when these two cultures worked alongside each other in the plantations. The triumph of the human spirit ensured that music forms emerged from these harsh experiences; traditions were retained and modified to produce music that spoke of pain, exile and reconstitution - a universal language that moves people of all cultures. This book examines a number of studies on these topics and features interviews with notable academics. Topics covered include how the Irish came to be in the Caribbean and why Montserrat is known as the "Other Emerald Isle"; how the Jamaican Maroons retained African traditions; and how the banjo became an integral part of folk music in the Caribbean, Ireland and the remote Appalachian Mountains. Supported by Heritage Lottery Fund.

Secular Martyrdom In Britain And Ireland written by Quentin Outram and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-30 with History categories.

This edited collection examines the concept and nature of the ‘people’s martyrology’, raising issues of class, community, religion and authority. It examines modern martyrdom through studies of Peterloo; Tolpuddle; Featherstone; Tonypandy; Emily Davison, fatally injured by the King’s horse on Derby Day, 1913; the 1916 Easter Rising; Jarrow, ‘the town that was murdered, and martyred in the 1930s’; David Oluwale, a Nigerian killed in Leeds in 1965; and Bobby Sands, the IRA hunger striker who died in 1981. It engages with the burgeoning historiography of memory to try to understand why some events, such as Peterloo, Tonypandy and the Easter Rising, have become household names whilst others, most notably Featherstone and Oluwale, are barely known. It will appeal to those interested in British and Irish labour history, as well as the study of memory and memorialization.
