Las Cartas a Elpidio del cubano Félix Varela son un manual de educación patriótica. Sus ideas al respecto encierran un extraordinario mensaje educativo, que llegaría al pueblo. Muy en especial a la juventud cubana. Se publicaron en 1835, tras irse Varela exiliado a los Estados Unidos. El primer tomo, dedicado a la impiedad, se compone de seis cartas; el segundo, en que trata de la superstición, consta de cinco. Según los críticos, el primer libro es superior al segundo por su estilo y, particularmente, la carta número cuatro, por su alto contenido ideológico. De estos tres temas solo llega a tratar los dos primeros. No era ésta la intención de Varela, según se lee en su «Prólogo» de las Cartas a Elpidio: «Mi objeto solo ha sido, como anuncia el título, considerar la impiedad, la superstición y el fanatismo en sus relaciones con el bienestar de los hombres, reservándome para otro tiempo presentar un tratado polémico sobre esta importante materia. No creo haber ofendido a ninguna persona determinada, pero no ha sido posible prescindir de dar algunos palos a ciertas clases. Quisiera que hubieran sido más flojos; pero estoy hecho a dar de recio, y se me va la mano. Aunque puede decirse que cada tomito forma una obra separada, he creído conveniente presentarlos como partes de una sola, por la relación que entre sí tienen. Como mi objeto no es exasperar, sino advertir, quedarán inéditos el segundo y tercer tomos, si por desgracia no tiene buena acogida el primero; y éste deberá, entonces, considerarse como una obra separada.» En las Cartas a Elpidio obra Félix Varela vuelca todo el amor y la esperanza que siente por su Cuba añorada. Reflexiona sobre la formación de los jóvenes. Trata de inculcarles, a través de estas páginas, los valores espirituales y éticos con que poder fundar los cimientos de la patria futura.

Juan Francisco Manzano and Gabriel de la Concepción Valdés (Plácido) were perhaps the most important and innovative Cuban writers of African descent during the Spanish colonial era. Both nineteenth-century authors used Catholicism as a symbolic language for African-inspired spirituality. Likewise, Plácido and Manzano subverted the popular imagery of neoclassicism and Romanticism in order to envision black freedom in the tradition of the Haitian Revolution. Plácido and Manzano envisioned emancipation through the lens of African spirituality, a transformative moment in the history of Cuban letters. Matthew Pettway examines how the portrayal of African ideas of spirit and cosmos in otherwise conventional texts recur throughout early Cuban literature and became the basis for Manzano and Plácido’s antislavery philosophy. The portrayal of African-Atlantic religious ideas spurned the elite rationale that literature ought to be a barometer of highbrow cultural progress. Cuban debates about freedom and selfhood were never the exclusive domain of the white Creole elite. Pettway’s emphasis on African-inspired spirituality as a source of knowledge and a means to sacred authority for black Cuban writers deepens our understanding of Manzano and Plácido not as mere imitators but as aesthetic and political pioneers. As Pettway suggests, black Latin American authors did not abandon their African religious heritage to assimilate wholesale to the Catholic Church. By recognizing the wisdom of African ancestors, they procured power in the struggle for black liberation.
