"Cartas Chilenas" é uma coleção de treze poemas escritos em forma de cartas, atribuídas ao pseudônimo Critilo e dirigidas a Doroteu, também um nome fictício. As cartas são uma crítica mordaz à administração corrupta do governador Luís da Cunha Meneses, retratado na obra como Fanfarrão Minésio. Através dessas cartas, Gonzaga expõe os abusos, a corrupção e as injustiças cometidas pelo governador e seus aliados. A obra foi escrita durante o período colonial brasileiro, um tempo de grande exploração econômica e social, especialmente em Minas Gerais, onde a extração de ouro era a principal atividade. As "Cartas Chilenas" surgem como um reflexo do descontentamento dos colonos com a opressão e a corrupção do governo português. Gonzaga, que foi um dos envolvidos na Inconfidência Mineira, movimento que buscava a independência do Brasil, utiliza a sátira para expressar as frustrações e as esperanças de seus contemporâneos.
