Señor, Había yo empezado a formar esta Carta Dedicatoria para V.M. siguiendo el común estilo de los Autores, que, en la oferta que hacen de algún Libro a algún Príncipe, o Magnate, siempre toman por asunto capital implorar la protección del Patrono que eligen, como medio para lograr la indemnidad de la Obra, que dan a luz. Mas a los primeros pasos, que di por este camino, con mejor consejo, traté de borrar lo poco que llevaba escrito; porque advertí, Señor, que un Libro, en cuya frente va colocado el Augusto nombre de V.M., en él lleva la más eficaz recomendación para salvarle de toda hostilidad. Sí, Señor; porque en las mismas letras, de que consta el nombre de Carlos Tercero, con una especie, como de traducción literal, lee ya todo el Mundo: Carlos el Sabio, Carlos el Justo, Carlos el Pío, Carlos el Generoso, Carlos el Magnánimo; que todo esto, y aún mucho más, significa el Régio nombre de Carlos Tercero. Así juzgo, Señor, que el Censor más severo, en cuyas manos caiga este Libro, en atención al Soberano Patrono a quien le consagro, ya que no le conceda la aprobación, que no merezco, no me niegue una benigna indulgencia para los yerros, en que puedo haber incurrido, a que me reconozco tan arriesgado como el que más, no hallándose menos expuesta que otras a varios resbalos mi pluma, mayormente, cuando ya por mi larga edad se ve mal sostenida de una mano trémula.
