Combining intellectual history, geography and political science, this book addresses the relations between geography and the federalist tendencies of key individuals during the nineteenth-century Italian Risorgimento. The book investigates the development of transnational federalist attitudes amongst a political network of intellectuals, and hones in on several understudied figures who played important roles in the Italian radical movements for national and social liberation. Notably, this includes political geographers who mobilised geographical metaphors to foster change and reorganise territories. The author demonstrates how federalism, anarchism and republicanism were all connected and led not only to autonomy in Italy, but more locally within its regions and municipalities, and more broadly across Europe over the ‘Long Risorgimento’ period. Il libro, attraverso un'accurata e dettagliata disamina delle fonti primarie coeve (in particolare carteggi, giornali e documenti manoscritti ed a stampa), rivisita l'azione di Mazzini, di Garibaldi e di altri patrioti di primo e di secondo piano nella Lombardia redenta dalle Cinque giornate, con uno sguardo agli antecedenti ed agli avvenimenti successivi. L'autore però ha dato rilievo anche ai "dimenticati dalla Storia", cioè a quei tanti sconosciuti che non occuparono ruoli dirigenti o non apportarono contributi teorici al dibattito risorgimentale, ma che fecero sí che l'Italia vivesse la stagione della "primavera dei popoli" grazie al loro coraggio ed ai loro sacrifici spinti talvolta fino all'estremo. Del resto non furono solo i grandi personaggi a dare vita al Quarantotto italiano, un nodo cruciale della nostra storia, perché entrò prepotentemente in scena quel popolo che per tanti anni i democratici avevano cercato di chiamare alla lotta affinché la nostra penisola conquistasse l'indipendenza, la libertà e la nazionalità. Dal volume emerge quindi un quadro articolato e vivace in cui risalta l'importanza del cosiddetto "partito d'azione" con le sue componenti e le sue figure più o meno famose. Indubbiamente i democratici del Risorgimento commisero molti errori e mostrarono limiti progettuali e politici, ma riuscirono a forgiare la coscienza nazionale scrivendo pagine indelebili nel nostro lungo e tortuoso cammino per diventare una nazione.

Il giorno dopo il Piemonte di Carlo Alberto dichiara guerra allimpero austroungarico, seguito a breve da Ferdinando di Borbone, Leopoldo di Toscana e dal Papa, Pio IX.Milano si trova così al centro di una stagione decisiva ─ la primavera dei portenti, come la definirà Alessandro Manzoni ─ per lintero equilibrio europeo: un sommovimento partito a febbraio da Parigi, che in poche settimane si propaga a Vienna, Praga, Berlino e altre capitali del Vecchio Continente. Gli ideali liberali e democratici, la spinta nazionale e federale animano un ampio fronte politico e sociale composto da aristocratici e borghesi, artigiani e operai.Come spesso è successo nella storia dItalia, anche nel Risorgimento Milano anticipa il corso degli eventi e lo sviluppo delle nuove idee, a partire dal federalismo.
