The historical novel Carterhaugh is based on the old Scottish ballad "Tam Lin", which tells how the young, handsome Tam Lin is kidnapped by the Queen of Elves in the forest of Carterhaugh. Jane (Janet), who is expecting his child, rescues him and saves him from being sacrificed to hell. The story is usually set in the period shortly after the Norman Conquest and is about their noble families. However, the characteristics of the plot suggest to me a far earlier age. Fairies and elves date from the Celtic period, when the old Celtic gods were pushed into the background during Christianization. Such beings were then transposed and reinterpreted, and in these guises were preserved in the traditional legends and stories. Also, the mention of hell seems to me to be a Christian interpretation of the Celtic Otherworld. In addition, many well-known Scottish families have claimed the tale of Tam Lin (Lynn, Munroe, Dunbar, Douglas, Lord of Foulis), but none can be unequivocally associated with it - suggesting the story is much older. The ballad ends with Jane winning Tam Lin, but what happened after that, and what was the background? Who was Tam Lin really? Who was the Elf Queen, and who were the people of Carterhaugh? I try to offer an answer set at the end of the ninth century, when the kingdom of the Celtic Gododdin, formerly conquered and suppressed by the Germanic Anglo-Saxons, was liberated by the Scottish troops and annexed to the Kingdom of Scotland (then called Alba). In addition, I have added a Welsh language pronunciation, as it is likely that it was quite similar to the Gododdin language at the time.

Sorrow and trouble and bitterness will bound you and yours and the children of yours... Some said the dying words of Nial Lynn, murdered by his own son, were a wicked curse. To others, it was a winter's tale spun by firelight on cold, dark nights. But when Corbet Lynn came to rebuild his family estate, memories of his grandfather's curse were rekindled by young and old - and rumours filled the heavy air of summer. In the woods that border Lynn Hall, free-spirited Rois Melior roams wild and barefooted in search of healing herbs. She is as hopelessly unbridled - and unsuited for marriage - as her betrothed sister Laurel is domestic. In Corbet's pale green eyes, Rois senses a desperate longing. In her restless dreams, mixed with the heady warmth of harvest wine, she hears him beckon. And as autumn gold fades, Rois is consumed with Corbet Lynn, obsessed with his secret past - until, across the frozen countryside and in flight from her own imagination, truth and dreams become inseparable...

A fantastic tale by the legendary Diana Wynne Jones—with an introduction by Garth Nix. Polly Whittacker has two sets of memories. In the first, things are boringly normal; in the second, her life is entangled with the mysterious, complicated cellist Thomas Lynn. One day, the second set of memories overpowers the first, and Polly knows something is very wrong. Someone has been trying to make her forget Tom - whose life, she realizes, is at supernatural risk. Fire and Hemlock is a fantasy filled with sorcery and intrigue, magic and mystery - and a most unusual and satisfying love story. Widely considered to be one of Diana Wynne Jones's best novels, the Firebird edition of Fire and Hemlock features an introduction by the acclaimed Garth Nix - and an essay about the writing of the book by Jones herself.
