The conference, “Measuring Migration: How? When? Why?”, was an interdisciplinary and international venue for academics, practitioners, and students to explore the idea of “measuring” migration” using a variety of methods from interdisciplinary perspectives. Participants explored the ethics and implications of what it means to track migratory flows and discussed when this might be appropriate and why these data are helpful/harmful. This conference was hosted in hybrid format online and in-person at the University of Oxford on June 9-10, 2022 (Oxford, England, UK) and was sponsored by MigrationOxford (previously known as the Migration and Mobility Network) and Nuffield College. There were over 300 participants registered from around the world, spanning six continents and dozens of institutions. There were over 30 paper presentations on 10 panels and four keynote addresses/panels that took place over the two days. The proceedings included in this volume cover the majority of the papers presented. We would like to thank our colleagues who served on the program and steering committees, as well as those who helped us on the ground as local coordinators. We are particularly grateful for our funders at Nuffield College and MigrationOxford for their faith in the success of this event. Most of all, we would like to thank our speakers and presenters who came in-person and online to participate in the first Measuring Migration conference in this series. With attention to the methodological questions that arise from the attempt to study such changes empirically, it offers new theoretical foundations for understanding the social construction and reconstruction of spaces through communicative action. Seeing communicative action as the basic element in the social construction of reality and conceptualizing communication not only in terms of the use of language and texts, but as involving any kind of objectification, such as technologies, bodies and non-verbal signs, it considers the roles of both direct and mediatized (or digitized) communication. An examination of the conceptualization of the communicative (re-)construction of spaces and the means by which this change might be empirically investigated, this book demonstrates the fruitfulness of the notion of refiguration as a means by which to understand the transformation of contemporary societies. As such, it will appeal to sociologists, social theorists, and geographers with interests in social construction and urban space.

Combining intellectual history, geography and political science, this book addresses the relations between geography and the federalist tendencies of key individuals during the nineteenth-century Italian Risorgimento. The book investigates the development of transnational federalist attitudes amongst a political network of intellectuals, and hones in on several understudied figures who played important roles in the Italian radical movements for national and social liberation. Notably, this includes political geographers who mobilised geographical metaphors to foster change and reorganise territories. The author demonstrates how federalism, anarchism and republicanism were all connected and led not only to autonomy in Italy, but more locally within its regions and municipalities, and more broadly across Europe over the ‘Long Risorgimento’ period.
