The short story as an autonomous genre has called the attention of both writers and literary critics with theoretical concerns over the last two centuries. It is a form of writing that has met the favour of readers and publishers alike: because of its very brevity, it can be consumed in a short time, and so come up to a reader's need of either escapist or serious literature; it can be practiced, like the novel, according to different narrative modalities: from popular genres, which satisfy the demands of the literary market, to experimental writing. Finally, as a self-contained form, it works well at a didactic level; in British and American universities, for instance, short stories are generally studied in Creative Writing courses. The essays included in the present volume deal with short stories belonging to various literatures in English (and not only), and focus on time, which is looked at from different angles: as the theme, or motif, of a text; as a narrative structure which can be approached in narratological terms, with neat distinctions between the time of story and the time of discourse, between writing time and reading time; as history, merging into memory and myth.

Trascorse l’infanzia a Chatham e poi seguì il padre nel traumatico trasferimento a Londra. Da allora la metropoli fu non solo la sua residenza abituale ma anche l’insostituibile centro ispiratore della sua arte. Morì nel 1870. Le sue strade, ora larghe e percorse da eleganti carrozze, ora viuzze fetide, a stento illuminate dalle lanterne degli antri frequentati da uomini e donne di malaffare; la sua gente, dipinta in grandi affreschi vivacissimi, come nelle descrizioni del tribunale dove vengono condannate folle di debitori insolventi, o ritratta da vicino, così vicino da mostrare gli occhi arrossati dall’alcool o dal pianto di una prostituta, la bocca piegata in una smorfia amara dei bambini già ladri a dodici anni. La grande metropoli rimane sullo sfondo anche quando racconta la vita della provincia e scrive dei Tempi difficili degli operai che allora conoscevano lo sfruttamento introdotto dalla rivoluzione industriale, mentre i figli nelle scuole venivano depredati con sadismo della fantasia e degli affetti; e scrive di Grandi speranze che fioriscono sulle rovine del passato, con tante fatiche e dolori. Vuole, Dickens, sempre un lieto fine alle sue storie, che tutto si risolva come nella notte di Natale di Scrooge, o nella storia di David Copperfield: ma spesso l’accento non è posato con eleganza sul bel finale, sul bel matrimonio, sul cattivo che diventa buono. L’accento, anche con sfumature ironiche irresistibili, cade sembra a malincuore sulla disperazione che invade la vita quotidiana di tanti uomini e donne (le sue eroine “negative” sono figure splendide) sofferenti senza colpa, sulla cattiveria contro i bambini e gli indifesi; Dickens è immenso quando si accosta ai perdenti. Pensiamo a Oliver Twist, nato in un ospizio per poveri, e lo vediamo non con indosso i begli abiti da giovane aristocratico che alla fine conquisterà, ma vestito di stracci, sporco di fango e fumo, mentre corre con la sua banda di piccoli ladri nelle strade della grande, maleodorante, popolatissima, splendida Londra. Charles Dickens nacque a Portsmouth nel 1812. Trascorse l’infanzia a Chatham e poi seguì il padre in un traumatico trasferimento a Londra.
