The power grid can be considered one of twentieth-century engineering?s greatest achievements, and as grids and populations grow, robustness is a factor that planners must take into account. Power grid robustness is a complex problem for two reasons: the underlying physics is mathematically complex, and modeling is complicated by lack of accurate data. This book sheds light on this complex problem by introducing the engineering details of power grid operations from the basic to the detailed; describing how to use optimization and stochastic modeling, with special focus on the modeling of cascading failures and robustness; providing numerical examples that show ?how things work?; and detailing the application of a number of optimization theories to power grids.?

At beginning to read this book the reader enters from the first lines onward already, upon an unusual sphere, whilst a bright world begins to open up. The author takes you ever deeper into heights, into depth, endorsing awareness ever further into verities of renewed discovery. One becomes endowed with a new light, a vast sense of the eternal mysteries. Despite the mysteries ongoing, yet they begin to give us clues, to finding the golden thread amid the mazes. As you traverse along, pausing awhile at the lovely and sometimes startling verses in this work, which are bound to touch one profoundly into heart and soul. As we are taken into remotest beginnings, later; even there we played among the elements, the winds and vapors and onwards, still in the process of gathering atoms. A revealing view amid multidimensional context of meaning. With reading onward the perceptions open surely, each individually at one's own pace. The lines ease up soon enough when the content relaxes unto some personal glimpses now and then. The serene verses throughout are part of the shifting kaleidoscope, so suitable.

We are nomads. We are all nomads. We are all nomad singing our lives into the night. Our lives arise, melodies and syncopated rhythms giving way to meanings and tellings. Shadows, echoes, and flickerings. Hints, mumblings, and innuendo. Some of the stanzas are whispers and others are loud, slow dirges. Some we sing alone. Others are call and response. We rarely sing together (all of us at once and in the same place), but we do. From time to time. Quite often when we are not trying to. Quite often we sing together, but from different places in time and space. A call. There is some sense of our nomad-self--our nomad soul--which responds to an inner and an outer call. It is as if the inner thrum--that ambient hum of our individual life--is lured to and infatuated with the outer thrum--that other ambient hum of life, the one for all that is. The calls meet up and they bond themselves covalently. That which is inside is magically seduced by that which is outside. Come and join the Caravan you are already a part of.

Little could Darby Peterson have anticipated the intensity of the challenge his friend Garnett Nelson’s invitation would command. Due to a medical condition that requires Nelson’s urgent attention, Nelson urges his long-time friend, Darby, to serve as the host and counselor of his Villa during his absence. The Villa, known as Montesereno, is committed to providing rest and renewal for its many clients and guests, suffering from a variety of contemporary disorders. Many who come are obsessed with bipolar anomalies, alcohol and anger issues, along with depression and sexual addictions. Darby recognizes the invitation requires counseling skills that he frankly lacks, as his field is philosophy; nonetheless, he accepts, inasmuch as Garnett has always wanted him to join his staff because of his “friendly and open-minded” nature and background as a “Renaissance man” and “conversationalist.” Thus Darby takes a leave of absence from his position as chair of his Atlanta University’s department of philosophy for however long Garnett should need him. What Darby cannot know is that his new role will become permanent. Adding to the mystique of his decision, if not contributing to its ultimate success, is the discovery of the Villa’s clients of Darby’s background as an ex-priest, tormented by his own past, divorce, and quest for love and healing. That the Villa is located in the scenic mountains of North Carolina, along its panoramic Parkway, adds to the wholeness and solace that Nature makes possible. There is ample love and challenge, as well as magic and mending in this story for every reader.

“The story of one of the most prolific, independent, and iconoclastic inventors of this century…fascinating.”—Scientific American Nikola Tesla (1856-1943), credited as the inspiration for radio, robots, and even radar, has been called the patron saint of modern electricity. Based on original material and previously unavailable documents, this acclaimed book is the definitive biography of the man considered by many to be the founding father of modern electrical technology. Among Tesla’s creations were the channeling of alternating current, fluorescent and neon lighting, wireless telegraphy, and the giant turbines that harnessed the power of Niagara Falls. This essential biography is illustrated with sixteen pages of photographs, including the July 20, 1931, Time magazine cover for an issue celebrating the inventor’s career. “A deep and comprehensive biography of a great engineer of early electrical science--likely to become the definitive biography. Highly recommended.”--American Association for the Advancement of Science “Seifer's vivid, revelatory, exhaustively researched biography rescues pioneer inventor Nikola Tesla from cult status and restores him to his rightful place as a principal architect of the modern age.” --Publishers Weekly Starred Review “[Wizard] brings the many complex facets of [Tesla's] personal and technical life together in to a cohesive whole....I highly recommend this biography of a great technologist.” --A.A. Mullin, U.S. Army Space and Strategic Defense Command, COMPUTING REVIEWS “[Along with A Beautiful Mind] one of the five best biographies written on the brilliantly disturbed.”--WALL STREET JOURNAL “Wizard is a compelling tale presenting a teeming, vivid world of science, technology, culture and human lives.”-
