There are a wide range of biotechnologies available and many of them have been, and are currently being, used in many situations and sectors worldwide to solve the myriad problems that farmers are facing. Documentation of the application of agricultural biotechnologies for smallholders is an important part of FAO’s role in facilitating knowledge sharing regarding agricultural biotechnologies. This document synthesizes a unique series of 15 case studies where agricultural biotechnologies were used to serve the needs of smallholders in developing countries. The introduction chapter provides an overall background and objectives of the compilation of case studies. The case studies cover different regions, production systems, species and underlying socioeconomic conditions in the crop, livestock and aquaculture/fisheries sectors. The biotechnologies covered include some that are considered quite traditional, such as artificial insemination, as well as other more modern ones, such as the use of DNA-based diagnostics. The case studies were prepared by scientists and researchers who were directly involved in the initiatives, and the authors aimed to provide the background, achievements, obstacles, challenges and lessons learned from each case study. The final chapter of the document provides a summary overview of the challenges, results and lessons learned from the 15 case studies.

The global bioeconomy landscape is diverse, reflecting various national and regional interpretations and visions. This study has conducted a global review of national and regional bioeconomy strategies, with a focus on sustainability objectives, definitions, priority areas, activities, and governance mechanisms. It highlights FAO's role in advancing a sustainable bioeconomy within the food and agriculture sectors. The study concludes by identifying gaps and opportunities in global bioeconomy development to guide FAO and its Members in shaping the transition to a sustainable global bioeconomy for food and agriculture. The concept of bioeconomy is gaining significant global traction, evolving from its early focus on resource substitution and biotechnological innovation to a more comprehensive and cross-cutting model for sustainable development. This perspective underscores its transformative potential, aiming to reshape the existing economic paradigm into one that is economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable. However, bioeconomy is not inherently sustainable. Realizing its potential requires robust governance that ensures alignment with societal goals. Increased biomass demand, central to bioeconomy development, poses challenges such as resource competition and international trade impacts.Without assessing the economic, environment and social sustainability of the bioeconomy, this transition risks exacerbating global inequalities related to resource access, environmental degradation and land rights. This study was prepared by the Office of Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), within the framework of its Programme Priority Area bioeconomy for sustainable food and agriculture. The insights gathered aim to guide FAO in shaping the strategic direction of its corporate area of work on bioeconomy, strengthening the role of agrifood systems in driving the transformative potential of the bioeconomy across other sectors.

The global community has committed to responding to climate change while ensuring decent livelihoods and healthy food for everyone, keeping within planetary boundaries. Transforming agrifood systems is essential to meeting these challenges, with climate response being an intrinsic element. The need for more resilient systems that can sustain increasing demands in a setting of tightening constraints is evident. Resilience must be generated across environmental, social and economic domains, all the while maintaining the economic viability of agrifood systems to ensure that transition occurs in a just and fair manner. Climate technologies are a key enabler to support climate action and the sustainable transition of agrifood systems. The report highlights the needs for robust technology assessments to underpin climate technology identification for agrifood systems transformation that addresses all stages of agrifood value chains. This needs to be supported by capacity-building programmes, targeted financing and fed into the ongoing climate policy process. The capacity-building strategy and efforts are to be tied to the technology assessments, and identify suitable and correct skill sets, especially for smallholders and vulnerable segments of the population.

Biotechnological Approaches For Sustaining Forest Trees And Their Products written by Dennis Thomas T and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-09-26 with Science categories.

This edited book gives an in-depth coverage of various aspects of biotechnological procedures followed by international scientists and researchers to sustain growth and improvement of forests in context of current climatic change. Forests especially trees play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance as well as in the functioning of natural ecosystem. More importantly, they contribute to the economic growth of a country through its products such as timber, fuel, pharmaceuticals, fibre for textile industry and edible fruits. The denudation of trees due to urbanisation of towns/cities/villages by various construction activities and industrialisation directly impact the climate change resulting in global warming, short rainfall or erroneous weather currently experienced. This book is an effort to address these problems and attempts to find out solutions using biotechnological approaches. Most of the proposed chapters cover latest information. The proposed book deals with biotechnological aspects of forest trees such as micropropagation, somatic embryogenesis, somaclonal variation, synthetic seeds, cryopreservation, disease amangement and genetic engineering. Further, applications and limitations of these approaches to improve the forest trees are discussed. The book is of relevance to teachers, students and researchers working in area of forest and plant biotechnology globally.

Genomics Based Approaches For Tropical Tree Improvement And Conservation written by Ani A. Elias and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-04-30 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book offers foundational knowledge to advance genomic approaches in forest tree improvement and genetic resource conservation. The tropical tree breeding sector has fallen behind in genomic breeding not due to a lack of resources but rather a limited understanding and an underdeveloped genomic breeding pipeline. While marker-assisted selection (MAS) has been the preferred method for incorporating genomic data into breeding programs, it primarily targets major genes, overlooking minor gene effects. This limitation makes MAS less effective for enhancing quantitative traits such as heartwood content. The primary goal of statistical methodologies using whole-genome information is to predict promising candidates for breeding advancement/commercialization while efficiently managing resources such as land, labor, and, most critically, time. Given the long rotation period of forest tree crops, the ability to identify, select, and modify genotypes with high heritability for economically valuable traits within a shorter timeframe marks a significant advancement in breeding. This book provides comprehensive guidelines on leveraging genomic data, including pathogenomics, to breed resilient, future-ready trees and manage populations effectively. To reinforce these guidelines, the book presents case studies on species such as Tectona grandis, Santalum album, Casuarina, Shorea, Artocarpus, tropical and sub-tropical pines, and tropical fruit trees. Additionally, the book explores broader applications of genetic data, including timber tracing and the conservation of germplasm while minimizing genetic redundancy. This book will be a valuable resource for tropical tree breeders and researchers, equipping them with the methods and tools needed to adopt advanced genomic breeding. Additionally, students and scholars will benefit from the comprehensive information it provides, enhancing their understanding of modern breeding techniques.

Reconstructing Biotechnologies written by Guido Ruivenkamp and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-08-28 with Business & Economics categories.

The main subject of this publication is the co-creation of society and biotechnology. The authors do not treat society and biotechnology as separate domains, instead they consider technologies as socially constructed. The main focus of this publication is on agro-biotechnologies and the contributors present perspectives for reconstruction both from and in 'the North' and 'the South'. Reconstructing biotechnologies offers a range of critical social analyses confronting the actuality of biotechnology with the potentialities of its social reconstruction. In doing that, the book develops and merges literature from four different disciplines, namely (i) critical theory and its analyses of technology and power, (ii) political economy, critically assessing the interrelationship between economy, politics and technology, (iii) social constructivism, which holds that technology is the product of agency and knowledge systems, and (iv) the analysis of rural society and agrarian technologies in rural sociology. Reconstructing biotechnologies introduces exciting approaches and examples into the social reshaping of biotechnologies. It brings together critical examinations of contemporary biotechnology development and puts forward possible alternatives written by critical scholars. The contributions in this publication are for students and scholars in a wide range of disciplines such as social and political sciences, science and technology studies, and development studies. The editors of the book are associated with the Social Sciences Department of Wageningen University in the Netherlands and the Graduate School of Economics of Kyoto University in Japan. They have published extensively on social and political theory and biotechnology.
