The British Columbia Forest Service is reviewing the timber supply in all timber supply areas (TSAs) and tree farm licence areas in the province to identify the economic, environmental, and social consequences of existing forest management practices, identify where improved information is needed, and provide information to make necessary adjustments to the allowable annual cuts (AACs) for the next five years. This discussion paper summarizes the technical reports from the timber supply review in the Cassiar TSA. It describes the timber supply review process; the Cassiar TSA, including forest resources, current AAC, and a socio-economic profile; current management practices; timber supply forecasts and critical factors, including a base case forecast; and environmental and socio-economic impacts.

The Cassiar Timber Supply Area (TSA) covers over 14.8 million hectares in north-west British Columbia. About 1.3% of the TSA area is available for timber harvesting under current management considerations & objectives. After a brief description of the TSA area, this report reviews the principles for determining the allowable annual cut for the area and presents an accounting of the factors and the rationale used in making that determination. These factors include the role of the timber supply analysis, the land base contributing to timber harvesting, the existing forest inventory, the expected rate of forest growth, regeneration delay, silvicultural treatments, decay and wastage, integrated resource management objectives, harvest flow, community implications, and forest industry facilities. The appendix contains relevant sections of provincial forestry legislation.

The Cassiar Timber Supply Area (TSA), located in the northwest corner of British Columbia, is the province's largest TSA at over 13.4 million hectares. Under 3.7 million hectares of the TSA are forested, and there are only about 400,000 hectares that contribute to the timber harvesting land base. After a brief description of the TSA, this report reviews the principles for determining the allowable annual cut for the TSA and presents an accounting of the factors and the rationale used in making that determination. These factors include the role of the base-case timber supply forecast, the land base that contributes to the timber harvest, the existing forest inventory and its expected rate of growth, regeneration delay, silvicultural systems, integrated resource management objectives, decay and waste, and alternative harvest flows. The appendix includes relevant sections of the provincial forestry legislation and a summary of public input to the Cassiar TSA Timber Supply Review.
