This book seeks to explore the pneumatological signifi cance of the use of the Hebrew term, (ruah spirit) in the book of Psalms. It will compare and contrast the use of as it relates to a basic understanding of (ruah qodeshkha literally, your spirit of holiness) in Psalm 33:6; 51:10 13; 104:30; 139:7 12; and 143:10. David in his personal communion with God was the fi rst to reveal the activity of the Holy Spirit as indwelling and guiding the believer even with a possible expansion of the idea of regeneration in the Old Testament. This book concludes that a manifestation of the person and work of the Holy Spirit appears to occur within the fi ve targeted passages.

Through a systematic analysis of the conflicts emerging when the public church encounters the public world, The Scandal of Pentecost argues that the public advent of the church stands in continuity with the public scandal of the incarnate and crucified Christ. The book traces the contours of this scandal in the confrontation of the dominant ruling hermeneutic of authority with a Christian hermeneutic of resistance. This highlights the brokenness of the human condition manifested by the church in the drunkenness of the disciples, the speaking in other tongues, the baptism with the Spirit, the empowerment of the flesh, and its public witness to a scandalized world. The effects of the scandal transform both the disciples' individual and communal witness and their public recognition as the church. Through the lens of a symbolic hermeneutic, the public witness of the church at Pentecost reveals a Christian scandal of anthropological proportions: with the outpouring of the Spirit on all flesh the church emerges as the symbol of humanity.

"Biblical scholarship informed by the faith of the Church and to serve the life of the Church is called ecclesial. In 1988, Joseph Ratzinger put forward a proposal of what this should mean, which he called "Method C," in contrast to the patristic-medieval approach (Method A) and the historical-critical approach (Method B). This book examines the warrant for the Method C proposal in the document Dei Verbum of the Second Vatican Council, and offers nine studies applying this method that bring to the surface issues such as the relationship between Old Testament and New Testament, literal sense and spiritual sense, and Scripture and Tradition"--

Hebrew Psalms And The Utrecht Psalter written by Pamela Berger and has been published by Penn State Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-01-28 with Religion categories.

In a major departure from previous scholarship, this volume argues that the illustrations in the famous and widely influential Utrecht Psalter manuscript were inspired by a late antique Hebrew version of Psalms, rather than a Latin, Christian version of the text. Produced during the early ninth century in a workshop near Reims, France, the Utrecht Psalter is illustrated with pen-and-ink drawings in a lively style reminiscent of Hellenistic art. The motifs are largely literal renditions of words and phrases found in the book of Psalms. However, more than three dozen motifs cannot be explained by either the Latin text that accompanies the imagery or the commentaries of the church fathers. Through a close reading of the Hebrew Psalms, Pamela Berger demonstrates that these motifs can be explained only by the Hebrew text, the Jewish commentary, or Jewish art. Drawing comparisons between the “Hellenistic” style of the Psalter images and the style of late antique Galilean mosaics and using evidence from recent archaeological discoveries, Berger argues that the model for those Psalter illustrations dependent on the Hebrew text was produced in the Galilee. Pioneering and highly persuasive, this book resolves outstanding issues surrounding the origins of one of the most extensively studied illuminated manuscripts. It will be mandatory reading for many historians of medieval art and literature and for those interested in the Hebrew text of the book of Psalms.

Psalms 42 72 Itc written by Mark W. Elliott and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-10-31 with Religion categories.

Psalms 42-72, many of which are closely identified with King David as person as well as figure, include some of the most intimate and forceful expressions of Israelite/Judean spirituality. The Psalms reveal many theological points along the way; some of these developed, others inchoate. The security in Zion's God which replies to the longing of 'the soul' gives way to Psalms which keenly feel the absence of God, interspersed with assertions of the Lord's ability to save, and a widening sense of the scope of salvation as being in some sense 'communal'. Mark W. Elliott examines these and other themes in Psalms 42-72. He considers historical exegesis and makes use of literary approaches to get at the sense of the text. The riches of Christian praying and preaching of the psalms provide a guide into deeper theological assertion, with Elliott keeping one eye on the covenant relationship of faith and the other on Christ as author and finisher thereof.
