This book seeks to explore the pneumatological signifi cance of the use of the Hebrew term, (ruah spirit) in the book of Psalms. It will compare and contrast the use of as it relates to a basic understanding of (ruah qodeshkha literally, your spirit of holiness) in Psalm 33:6; 51:10 13; 104:30; 139:7 12; and 143:10. David in his personal communion with God was the fi rst to reveal the activity of the Holy Spirit as indwelling and guiding the believer even with a possible expansion of the idea of regeneration in the Old Testament. This book concludes that a manifestation of the person and work of the Holy Spirit appears to occur within the fi ve targeted passages.

Why another book on the Psalms? Surely there are enough already. What is the justification for yet one more, and by someone who first found the Psalms almost boringly the same? Jonathan Magonet has a ready answer. After teaching the Psalms for twenty years he has found that within the vast literature about them there is very little that introduces the kinds of interpretations made by the rabbis, whether ancient, mediaeval or modern. Moreover, there are very few books which provide a 'user-friendly' introduction to how one actually sets about working with the Hebrew text or gives access to the richness and complexity of the language of the Psalms to the non-Hebrew reader. It was his first close acquaintance with the Hebrew text, in preparing some translations of the Psalms for publication, which transformed Jonathan Magonet's view of them and helped him to discover their richness. So this book aims to share with the reader the special world that was opened up to him in this way. It provides an introduction to the nature of biblical poetry, a guide to some of the poetic structures that recur in the Psalms, and studies a number of Psalms as a way of illustrating these aspects - and for the fun of exploring the individual dynamic and meaning.

A careful exploration of how the identity and mission of the Holy Spirit have been progressively revealed throughout Holy Scripture and then interpreted by the Church. The Progressive Mystery describes how the Spirit has been revealed, understood, and interpreted throughout the sweep of Holy Scripture and the ways in which the orthodox understanding of the mission of the Holy Spirit has developed. An ideal entrée into the study of pneumatology, it introduces readers to the complex history of the theology of the Holy Spirit. Ideal for students, it takes its place among other introductions to pneumatology, as a readable and reliable guide to an elusive topic.

What do you believe about souls? There are many very different doctrines taught in the world today concerning souls that are believed to be in all humans. By most a soul is believed to be something that is wholly apart from the person a soul is in; that a soul is something that is that is believed to be complete in its self without the person; it will live after the person it is in is dead; it is believed that a soul will exist forever without the person; it will never be dead; therefore, a soul cannot be resurrected from the dead. It is believed that a soul must live someplace forever, and it will live either in Heaven or Hell even if there is no resurrection. The doctrine of unconditional immortality of a deathless soul being in a person, and that soul leaving that person at the death of the person makes it impossible for Christ to have give His life to save that soul from death; if a soul had immortality it would already have life and could never not have life; all Christ could do is give it a reward or punish it.

Reverential, celebratory, antagonistic, and even erotic, this remarkable collection of essays interprets the Psalms as a collection of poetry. Written by 14 acclaimed poets, the essays approach the Psalms from a personal, often autobiographical perspective, demonstrating how relevant they remain for today’s readers. Alicia Ostriker examines the Psalms’ glory and their terror in a moving essay that revels in their moods of joy while acknowledging the brutality they invoke, linking their violence to events such as 9/11, the Palestinian uprisings, and the Rwandan massacres. Weaving autobiographical anecdotes with scholarly introspection, Enid Dame provides a Jewish explanation of Psalm 22, while editor Lynn Domina contemplates the pastoral life as she connects the everyday with phrases from the Psalms. From a former nun to a self-described left-wing Jew, from a Midrashic scholar to a Texas rancher, the contributors mirror the wide swath of humanity interested in, and affected by, the Psalms.

What would Christianity be like without the soul? While most people would expect the Christian bible to reveal a highly traditional opposition of matter and spirit, the spirit forces of the Old and New Testaments are often surprisingly physical, dynamic, and practical, a matter of energy as much as ethics. The Secret History of the Soul examines the forgotten or suppressed models of body, soul, and human consciousness found in the literature, philosophy and scripture of the ancient and classical worlds. It shows how the spirit forces of Homer, Plato, Aristotle, and the Old and New Testaments tended to be quantities not entities, and to be closely bound up with the dynamic physical flux of the human body, rather than cleanly abstracted in some absolute immaterial realm. Forces such as menos and thymos, nephesh, pneuma and dynamis not only blurred the line between body and soul, but were potent and transferable, being used, in New Testament culture, to effect magical cures or bestow magical power. Related to this surprising lack of body-soul dualism is a lack of dualistic afterlife in either Homer or Hebrew scripture, where Hades and Sheol are the sole post-mortem destinations. The Secret History of the Soul restores the living strangeness of a spirit world filled with potent energy and practical magic, in cultures which had not yet glimpsed the abstracted soul of later Christianity.
