For over 2,000 years, the Chinese have been producing amulets in the shape of flat metal objects, usually cast in brass or bronze, some shaped like the traditional square-holed cash coins, others in a variety of fancy shapes, promising good luck in various fields, the turning away of evil influences, or conveying religious sentiments. Some have inscriptions taken from the Classics of 500 BC. Previously, catalogues of these amulets were arranged in various different ways - by shape, size, meaning, Emperor's name, or a common feature. However, this made it difficult to locate a particular piece - it would not be immediately clear to a non-expert whether a piece was "Lucky", "Religious", "Family" or "Coin". This catalogue is designed for ease of identification. It is divided into four sections - Openwork, Pictorial, Zodiac, and Inscriptions. Preceding the detailed catalogue for each section is a Finding Guide which is arranged by salient features, or by the first character of the inscription. There is also a section which lists inscriptions that might not be clear as they are in non-standard scripts or lay-outs. In the catalogue there is a brief description of the piece, the inscription (if any) in Chinese characters and Pinyin, and a translation, explanation, and source. Over 5,000 amulets are included in the catalogue. Together they provide a fascinating insight into traditional Chinese beliefs and aspirations.

Various classes of objects were omitted from "Cast Chinese Amulets" (by this author), as their primary use was for gaming, rather than the bringing of good fortune. This book is intended to make good this omission. The pieces covered are: Horse Coins, a Song Dynasty game played with counters bearing the names of famous horses and generals. Chess Pieces, the well-known game of Chinese Chess, still played to this day. Select An Immortal. A game played during the Song dynasty using counters with illustrations of one of the Immortals, and a short poem describing their activities. Wine Drinking Game Coins. These are counters dating back to the time of the Han dynasty, and were used for a variety of drinking games. Study of these pieces gives an insight to Chinese history and traditions; full details of this are given for each piece.

First published in 2005, this catalogue has become the standard reference work for cast Chinese coins. It covers both the early spade and knife coins that were used from around 600 BC and the square holed "cash" coins that were the coinage of China from the 4th century BC until the end of the Empire in the 20th century. Special attention is given to the red copper coins of Xinjiang. As well as the catalogue, there is copious background information concerning the use and manufacture of these coins, and numerous charts, maps, and tables to help both the expert and the novice to identify their coins. The second edition has been extensively edited, and contains some new coins and sections. Awarded the Lhotka Prize by the Royal Numismatic Society.

This book offers an in-depth description and analysis of Chinese coin-like charms, which date back to the second century CE and which continued to be used until mid 20th century. This work is unique in that it provides an archaeological and analytical interpretation of the content of these metallic objects: inscriptive, pictorial or both. As the component chapters show, these coin-like objects represent a wealth of Chinese traditional folk beliefs, including but not limited to family values, social obligations and religious desires. The book presents a collection of contributed chapters, gathering a diverse range of perspectives and expertise from some of the world’s leading scholars in the fields of archaeology, religious studies, art history, language and museology. The background of the cover image is a page from Guang jin shi yun fu 廣金石韻府, a rhyming dictionary first published in the ninth year of the Kangxi Reign (1652 CE). The metal charm dates back to the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE), depicting two deities traditionally believed to possess the majic power of suppressing evil spirits. The stich-bound book in the foreground is a collection of seal impressions from the beginning of the 20th century. Its wooden press board is inscribed da ji xiang 大吉祥 by Fang Zhi-bin 方質彬 in the year of bing yin (1926 CE).

Tang Dynasty Qian Yuan Zhong Bao Cash Coins written by Matthew Dick and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-30 with categories.

The Chinese Tang Dynasty, lasting for 289 years from 618 to 907 AD, was a golden age, when literature, art, technological innovation, and trade flourished. To support a currency-based economy for a population that numbered 80 million by the end of the dynasty, coins were produced in the millions. As with most other pre-Modern Asian coins, the Tang coins were made of leaded bronze, had a square hole in the center, and bore a four-character inscription on the obverse side; this type of coin is called a "cash coin," or simply "cash." One of the two main series of Tang cash coins bears the inscription Qian Yuan Zhong Bao (abbreviated QYZB). The foremost previous reference on QYZB coins by Shôji Yoshida (2005) numbers 256 varieties of standard-sized (value-1) coins, including 123 with a plain reverse and 133 with a reverse mark. Building on Yoshida's classification, this identification guide focuses on fine-scale variation in plain-reverse varieties. It begins with introductory material on the historical context of QYZB coins, their method of production, what defines a variety, fake QYZB, terminology, and identifying features. The body of the guide provides detailed descriptions for 457 varieties or variants, with original obverse and reverse rubbings illustrating 461 coins. Two short appendices discuss whether and how to clean cash coins, and present guidelines for purchasing them on the Internet. While this guide includes many plain-reverse varieties not defined in Yoshida's book, the converse is also true. In fact, people attempting to identify value-1 QYZB will need both guides, and will undoubtedly still encounter coins not identifiable in either. Much remains to be learned about value-1 QYZB, which will continue to make the study of these coins interesting.
