Cornelius Castoriadis and the Project of Radical Autonomy analyses the philosophy of Greek-born French philosopher Cornelius Castoriadis. A leading member of the influential revolutionary group, Socialism or Barbarism in France, Castoriadis analysed contemporary political subjectivity and culture in terms of the collective and individual attempt to gain autonomy. His philosophy frames a multi-dimensional analysis of modern capitalist societies, based on a systematic critique of orthodox Marxism, Heideggerian ontology and Lacanian psychology. The present volume consists of two parts. In the first part, his most significant essays written before his departure to France in 1945 are translated and present young Castoriadis’ interpretation of Max Weber’s theory of bureaucratic societies. The second part consists of a series of essays by various scholars on aspects of Castoriadis’ mature philosophy in relation to other thinkers, and against the background of Europe’s political and social history.

In this vibrant debate with intellectuals influenced by Marcel Mauss, including Alain Caillé and Chantal Mouffe, the incisive Greek-French activist and philosopher Cornelius Castoriadis addresses the challenge of critical thinking in an international context. The first half explores the tradition of radical self-critique and the prospect of affirming its value in a non-ethnocentric way. While defending ancient Greek contributions to the Western tradition of radical self-critique — including the practice of “relativizing” one's own culture, of engaging in philosophical interrogation, and of establishing democratic institutions — Castoriadis is challenged to explore the trans-contextual features of any self-critical, or “autonomous,” social institution. In the second half Castoriadis offers a penetrating critique of representative democracy, and the discussion makes important strides toward a new conception of direct democracy, of political education, and of the institutional prerequisites for the continuation of radical self-critique in politics and philosophy.

Illusion And Fetishism In Critical Theory written by Vasilis Grollios and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-01 with Political Science categories.

Through the negative dialectics of Theodore Adorno, Illusion and Fetishism in Critical Theory offers an examination of Nietzsche, Benjamin, Castoriadis and the Situationists, who put the concept of illusion at the forefront of their philosophical thought. Vasilis Grollios argues that these political philosophers, except Castoriadis, have up to now been wrongly considered by many scholars to be far from the line of thinking of negative dialectics, Critical Theory and the early Frankfurt School/Open Marxist tradition. He illustrates how these thinkers focused on the illusions of capitalism and attempted to show how capitalism, by its innate rationale, creates social forms that are presented as unavoidable and universal, yet are historically specific and of dubious sustainability. Providing a unique overview of concepts including illusion, totality, fetishization, contradiction, identity thinking and dialectics, Grollios expertly reveals how their understanding of critique can help us open cracks in capitalism and radicalize democratic social practice today. Illusion and Fetishism in Critical Theory is a must read for scholars of political theory and political philosophy, critical theory, the Frankfurt School, sociology and democratic theory.

What is Open Marxism? Against a background of social regression and the ongoing, multifaceted crisis of capitalism, this book examines the Open Marxist tradition and how it develops the work of the early Frankfurt School in ways which significantly advance critical social theory as negative critique of capitalist society. The study situates Open Marxism as the latest critique of mechanistic interpretations of Marx and Marxism, evolutionism and positivism, and ''naturalized'' historical and societal processes. It charts the development of the different strands of Open Marxism: from Axelos in the 1950s, and Agnoli in the 1980s, to the work of Clarke, Bonefeld, Gunn and Holloway since the 1990s. The book describes the distinctive features of Open Marxist thought with a focus on its use and understanding of critique as negative and destructive. Negative critical theory is argued to be the only path still open to the possibility of human emancipation, and this volume describes how Open Marxism can be put to use in the work of building radical social praxis, with reference made in particular to the critique of class, political economy and the capitalist state. Explaining how Open Marxism's subversive negation of capitalist social relations and radical critique of capitalism's various perverted social forms this book is a vital contribution to a body of Marxist thought concerned with the contemporary struggle for human emancipation.
