Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) stellt eines der effektivsten Psychotherapieverfahren dar, um Traumafolgestörungen zu behandeln. Zahlreiche internationale Behandlungsleitlinien empfehlen EMDR zur Behandlung von Posttraumatischen Belastungsstörungen (PTBS). Der Band beschreibt praxisorientiert die acht Phasen der EMDR-Therapie und veranschaulicht das Vorgehen anhand von Fallbeispielen. Dabei wird auch auf die Unterschiede in der Behandlungsplanung von PTBS und Komplexer PTBS eingegangen. Die EMDR-Therapie greift Elemente der Verhaltenstherapie, der psychodynamischen und der kognitiven Therapie auf und ergänzt sie mit bilateraler Stimulation mittels Augenbewegungen. Das Vorgehen wird meist als angenehm und zielführend wahrgenommen. Dadurch kommt es zu wenigen Therapieabbrüchen und Motivationsproblemen. Fokus der EMDR-Therapie sind pathogene Erinnerungen an ein belastendes Ereignis, die als Ausgangspunkt dysfunktionaler Verarbeitungs- und Copingstrategien gesehen werden. Diese Erinnerungen werden gesucht und mithilfe freier Assoziation bearbeitet. Die Verarbeitung der Erinnerungen geschieht mit unterschiedlichen Modalitäten – gedanklich, emotional, körperlich und sensumotorisch. Die aktuelle Belastung durch die pathogenen Erinnerungen soll so reduziert oder beseitigt werden. Um Suggestionen im Verarbeitungsprozess der Patientinnen und Patienten zu minimieren, wird ein bis ins Detail operationalisiertes therapeutisches Vorgehen genutzt, das in diesem Band ausführlich beschrieben wird.
