Le plus souvent la stele'peut etre appelee (r funeraire c'est-a dire qu'elle est consacree au culte d'un ou de plusieurs morts. Dans ce cas le defunt est represente assis toujours a gauche, la face tournee et la main tendue vers une table d'ofirandes chargee, de l'autre cote de laquelle se tient debout un officiant, qui est generalement le fils du defunt'. Le cas le plus simple est celui ou il m'v a qu'un titulaire de la stele. D'ordinaire plusieurs personnages recoivent le culte funeraire sur un des registres de la stele, le pere et la mere sont figures devant la table d'offrandes; sur un autre registre, son fils et la femme de celui-ci peuvent etre representes dans la meme attitude. Le plus souvent aussi le chiffre des officiants se multiplie derriere l'otficiant principal, un ou plusieurs autres, hommes ou femmes, repetent le geste du premier. Enfin, sur certaines steles, la famille ou les clients-du titulaire, peuvent etre figures assis, la main tendue vers une table d'offrandes (d'ordinaire non dessinee), dans l'attitude de gens qui parti cipent au repas que le mort est cense gouter. Parfois la stele ne presente qu'une enumeration de noms, sans qu'il soit aise de definir, en pareil cas, si l'inscription des noms faisait participer ces gens au culte funeraire.
