During this aesthetically fertile period – beginning in 1467 with the reign of the Burgundian duke Charles the Bold and ending in 1561 with the death of the artist Simon Bening – the art of book painting was raised to a new level of sophistication. Sharing inspiration with the celebrated panel painters of the time, illuminators achieved astonishing innovations in the handling of color, light, texture, and space, creating a naturalistic style that would dominate tastes throughout Europe for nearly a century. Centering on the notable artists of the period – Simon Marmion, the Vienna Master of Mary of Burgundy, Gerard David, Gerard Horenbout, Bening, and others – the catalogue examines both devotional and secular manuscript illumination within a broad context: the place of illuminators within the visual arts, including artistic exchange between book painters and panel painters; the role of court patronage and the emergence of personal libraries; and the international appeal of the new Flemish illumination style. A companion to the Getty’s prize-winning exhibition catalogue Illuminating the Renaissance: The Triumph of Flemish Manuscript Painting in Europe, this volume contains thirteen selected papers presented at two conferences held in conjunction with that exhibition. The results achieved by the research of the pioneering MINIARE research project based at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge led to the ground-breaking and acclaimed 2016 exhibition "COLOUR: The Art and Science of Illuminated Manuscripts." This was followed by an international Conference, in which art historians, paper and book conservators, and cultural heritage scientists were brought together to share new recent research not only on manuscripts but also on painting in other media. The Conference proceedings were published in the first two volumes of the HMMIMA series (2017-2018). The present publication includes 6 Essays by way of introducing and explaining the major topics being investigated, including the range of inks, pigments and paint binders used by illuminators; parchment-making; pigment recipes; and model books. The many analytical instruments and techniques that are used to investigate manuscripts are also discussed. Then follow 58 Case Studies of manuscripts from as early as the year 700 up to c.1600. All these are fully illustrated in colour and in great detail, and should act as examples to inform scholars in libraries, museums and other cultural institutions of the benefits of adding scientific tools to the range of methods used to investigate manuscripts.

Excerpt from Exhibition of Illuminated Manuscripts Nevertheless the skill of hand and power of design which are seen t such advantage in the English books of the ninth to the twelfth centur which comprise the majority in Case A, Show no falling off in Case which contains an incomparable series of Psalters, mainly of the thirteent century, from Canterbury, York, St. Albans, Peterborough, Salisbury, an other great monastic centres. To continue the survey of the Englis manuscripts in this exhibition, Case C contains the earliest known Saru Book of Hours (58) side by side with a fine Psalter (59) partly decorated b the same illuminator, W. De Brailes. In Case D are two more kindre books, an East Anglian Psalter (64) and a Missal of great splendour (63 partly decorated by the same unknown hand. In Case E are the Gorlesto and St. Omer Psalters (67 two justly celebrated examples of the Eas Anglian school of the beginning of the fourteenth century, as well as book of absorbing interest to the student of art, of heraldry, and c mediaeval lore written and illuminated in I 327 for Edward 111. I Case F we have again two Psalters richly illuminated by the same anonymou artist, the one (72) for the use of John of Gaunt, the other (73) for that c his kinsman Humphrey, Earl of Hereford, the last male representative c the great house of Bohun. In Case G are notable series of Englis Bestiaries and Apocalypses. In Cases H and I are some fine Bible including a volume of the famous Winchester Bible of the twelfth centur The English books end in Case L, and include the Psalter of Eleano de Bohun, Duchess of Gloucester, elder daughter of the above-name Humphrey; the Psalter of Henry Beauchamp, Duke of Warwick, side b side with a smaller book of the same style, which probably belonged t his wife, and afterwards to Elizabeth, Queen of Henry VII; and finally remarkably beautiful volume written and illustrated by Thomas Chaundle Chancellor of the University of Oxford.
