Excerpt from Catalogue of the Magnificent Collection of Coins of the United States Formed by John G. Mills, Esq., Albany, New York They have nearly all came from famous cabinets and as Mr. Mills has in nearly every case preserved the pedigree of previous ownership as it may be termed, we have stated them in many instances in our catalogue. It is important to do so, not only on account of the examples themselves, but to prevent the feeling arising in the minds of collectors that additional specimens are appearing when they are the same pieces that have been known in previous collections. Excerpt from Catalog of the Magnificent Collection of the Gold, Silver and Copper Coins of the United States: Formed by the Late David S. Wilson, Esq., Pittsburgh The Gold Dollar series is the most complete in specimens from all Mints ever placed on sale, and includes a Dahlonega 1861, of which only four are known. It is needless to recapitulate the great number of rarities here, which will be found in due order in the catalog. I would particularly call the attention of the collectors to the Splendid series of gold proof sets, which, as sets, are exceedingly rare, and should be, and I believe will be, more highly appreciated in the future. The grandest coin that our country strikes to-day is the twenty-dollar piece, and that is at least as important as any other denomination, and no great collection can claim to fully represent the coins of the United States without contain ing all the denominations. The consideration of face value may be disregarded when we recollect that a collection of cents in the finest condition will easily average fifty dollars a piece. Excerpt from Catalogue of the Collection of Coins and Medals of the United States: Formed by the Late Thomas Ramsden, of Pittsburgh, and Sold by Order of His Executors This collection is remarkable for the vast number of specimens of the regular coinage of the country - not merely for those easily obtainable but for rarities - many of the highest having example after example, as for instance the 1796 half dollars, two 1797 six 1793 cents, eighteen 1799 four, including one of the best known, etc. The gold coins are also very choice. Indeed it seems as if the collector either was so attached to his coins that he could not bear to part with even pieces that became duplicates by purchases to improve his collection, or he had enjoyed completing set after set of the silver and copper coins until he had apparently several series. Yet this assiduous collector of United States coins, Thomas Ramsden, was born September 14, 1833, in Yorkshire, England. Excerpt from Catalog of the Valuable Collection of United States Gold and Silver Coins of the Late Charles Gordon Zug, Esq., Of Pittsburgh In his early boyhood, the late Charles Gordon Zug, began his collection of coins, and gave much attention to the interesting study of his country's coinage. He was born in Pittsburg, June 10th, 1872, and died at the age of 36 years, August 10, 1908, from heart failure caused by over-exertion through excessive bicycle riding while a lad. He was engaged in the iron manufacturing business with his father in Pittsburg. During the last years of his life he turned his atten tion particularly to the United States Gold Series, and though lacking a few of the higher rareties, he formed a splendid collection of the mint series of gold coins - the Eagles, including the rare 1798 and 1804, the Half Eag les, 1823, '25 and '30, and the Quarter Eagles, 1796, '97, 1821 and '26; Three Dollars - the rareties of 1865, '73 and '76, the last a brilliant proof, and his complete set of Dollars. He added largely to this series at my sale of the great collection of the late David S. Wilson, March, 1907, where Mr. Zug was one of the largest buyers, his purchases amounting to $3000, and I have preserved the record of the previous ownership of the pieces from this collection, by referring to this source in the present Catalogue. I can supply a few copies of the Wilson Sale Catalogue with price list at and with plates at the latter illustrating many additional coins of the Zug Sale. The Wilson Collection contained 600 pieces of U. S. Gold, and is the largest sale of the series ever held. He had not added much to the Silver Series during recent years, but it contains both varieties of the very rare 1796 Half Dollar in good condition.
