This book explores how the themes and insights of official Catholic Social Teaching (CST) and broader Catholic social thought might illuminate, and be illuminated by, a deeper engagement with the context of prisons. What resources might Catholic social thought bring to pastoral work in prisons? And what might listening to the prison context bring to Catholic social thought? The volume includes constructive proposals for the relationship between CST and prison ministry, as well as critical questions about the role and shortcomings of prisons, CST, and chaplaincy. It contains contributions by scholars and practitioners of theology, criminology, and prison chaplaincy from the UK, US, and Ireland, and reflects on the inextricable relationship of social action and pastoral care in the work of prison ministry.

The foundational ideas animating the Lampstand prison ministry-that it takes a reformed criminal to reform criminals and that the conversion approach must be intellectual-are ideas I have been working with since the beginning of my reformation from criminality at age thirty five, as I began seeing the world from the perspective of a college education (leading to a successful criminal rehabilitative college-based educational program I developed and managed) and continuing to the final washing from my spirit the last remnants of a lifetime of criminal thinking twenty years later, in the waters of baptism.

This is a penetrating critique of our criminal justice and penal systems from the unique, firsthand experiences of its priest-prisoner author. His conclusion is that they are “sick, broken, rudderless systems that neither correct nor rehabilitate offenders, nor help or heal victims.” A compelling case is made—from practical, biblical and humane arguments—for moving from retributive-punishment models of seeking justice to restorative-rehabilitative ones. Restorative justice actively involves victims, offenders and the community in a joint process of working toward healing, restitution, rehabilitation and reconciliation. Incarceration becomes only one option, rather than the foregone conclusion. Specific proposals are made for reforming the justice, prison and parole systems. Examples of working models are presented. Evaluation tools and discussion guides are provided. Christians will find rich meditative material and spiritual challenges, as the author plumbs the scriptures and Catholic social justice teachings for personal moral answers and principled civic policies. One chapter offers examples of what individuals, parishes and dioceses can and are doing to promote restorative justice. A cross-reference is included to the November 2000 document on criminal justice by the U.S. Catholic bishops. Topics covered include: the relationship of poverty, race, mental illness and drug addiction to incarceration; capital punishment; the consequences of three-strikes and minimum-mandatory sentencing; the effects of politics on policy; inadequate legal representation for the poor.

This Guide sets out how in nine sessions the key themes of the book can be explored and discussed by a group, with practical suggestions about how people might become more involved, and how, from a Christian perspective, public policy could be changed for the better. This important book deserves to be taken seriously if we are to face what is happening and do what we can to help improve a penal system that is still far from what any civilised society should be content with.

The Lived Experience Of Palliative Chaplains written by Caroline Yih and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-06-21 with Religion categories.

This book explores the unique challenges of disenfranchisement faced by Christian chaplains working within the secular and pluralistic context of contemporary healthcare. The case study focuses on practitioners in Hong Kong and showcases the utilisation of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) as a fruitful basis for practical theological endeavours. The role and perspective of the palliative chaplain as spiritual care specialist is examined, along with the tension that exists with the cultural and organisational context in which they operate. The chapters examine how end of life care practitioners can often face marginalisation, oppression, vulnerability, and disorientation among other difficult experiences that the author unites under a general theme of “homelessness”. The book contributes to discussions regarding fuller integration of the spiritual dimension within a holistic vision of end of life care provision. It will be of particular interest to scholars of practical theology and chaplaincy, as well as palliative medicine.

A free open access ebook is available upon publication. Learn more at www.luminosoa.org. Recent decades have seen a widespread effort to imprison more people for sexual violence. The Stains of Imprisonment offers an ethnographic account of one of the worlds that this push has created: an English prison for men convicted of sex offenses. This book examines the ways in which prisons are morally communicative institutions, instilling in prisoners particular ideas about the offenses they have committed—ideas that carry implications for prisoners' moral character. Investigating the moral messages contained in the prosaic yet power-imbued processes that make up daily life in custody, Ievins finds that the prison she studied communicated a pervasive sense of disgust and shame, marking the men it held as permanently stained. Rather than promoting accountability, this message discouraged prisoners from engaging in serious moral reflection on the harms they had caused. Analyzing these effects, Ievins explores the role that imprisonment plays as a response to sexual harm, and the extent to which it takes us closer to and further from justice.
