Se ha escrito del fracaso social del catolicismo español, del amarillismo del sindicalismo católico, del difícil surgimiento de un partido democratacristiano en España, pero, hasta ahora, no se había abordado un estudio sistemático del proceso de recepción de la 'Rerum Novarum' matriz fundamental de las nuevas ideas. Por otro lado, los estudios sobre el catolicismo social y el sindicalismo católico en España apenas se refieren a esta etapa de orígenes, a este "primer catolicismo social" inmediatamente posterior a la publicación de la Encíclica, fuente probablemente de posteriores desfases, retrasos y fracasos. El libro de Feliciano Montero contribuye en buena medida a llenar ese vacio historigráfico. El análisis del impacto y recepción de 'Rerum Novarum' que se aborda en este libro no pretende ser exhaustivo, si bien aspira a delimitar las distintas formas y niveles de recepción: dentro y fuera de la Iglesia. El marco de los congresos católicos, que se celebran en estos años en España, y que reúne, junto a la jerarquía y al clero, a representantes cualificados de los seglares (profesores, publicistas, profesionales), contribuye a un lugar bien representativo para medir, mediante el análisis de las memorias y conclusiones dedicadas a las cuestiones sociales, la evolución de la conciencia social católica y el alcance de la recepción de 'Rerum Novarum' por parte del catolicismo español en la última década del siglo XIX. El profesor Montero ha analizado la recepción de 'Rerum Novarum' en los distitnos niveles de expresión: el impacto en la jerarquía a través de una amplia muestra de boletines eclesiásticos diocesanos; los comentarios de los publicistas seglares y cléricos; y, finalmente, algunas formas de divulgación más popular de la Encíclica, como los catecismos sociales y los folletos del Apostolado de la Prensa. El tipo de investigación abordada, más centrada en la expresiones ideológicas y mentales que en el estado de las iniciativas y acciones, exigía esta revisión amplia de todo tipo de publicaciones impresas, desde el discurso y la pastoral hasta el artículo de revista, la memoria y el folleto. El 'Apéndice' recoge algunas de las muestras más representativas de los distintos niveles de recepción en la Encíclica. De especial interés para delimitar el proceso de maduración de la conciencia social católica en España es la recopilación de las conclusiones sociales de los distintos congresos católicos (que se ofrece en dicho Apéndice).
