White Fragility written by Robin DiAngelo and has been published by Penguin UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-02-07 with Social Science categories.

The International Bestseller 'With clarity and compassion, DiAngelo allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to "bad people." In doing so, she moves our national discussions forward. This is a necessary book for all people invested in societal change' Claudia Rankine Anger. Fear. Guilt. Denial. Silence. These are the ways in which ordinary white people react when it is pointed out to them that they have done or said something that has - unintentionally - caused racial offence or hurt. After, all, a racist is the worst thing a person can be, right? But these reactions only serve to silence people of colour, who cannot give honest feedback to 'liberal' white people lest they provoke a dangerous emotional reaction. Robin DiAngelo coined the term 'White Fragility' in 2011 to describe this process and is here to show us how it serves to uphold the system of white supremacy. Using knowledge and insight gained over decades of running racial awareness workshops and working on this idea as a Professor of Whiteness Studies, she shows us how we can start having more honest conversations, listen to each other better and react to feedback with grace and humility. It is not enough to simply hold abstract progressive views and condemn the obvious racists on social media - change starts with us all at a practical, granular level, and it is time for all white people to take responsibility for relinquishing their own racial supremacy. 'By turns mordant and then inspirational, an argument that powerful forces and tragic histories stack the deck fully against racial justice alongside one that we need only to be clearer, try harder, and do better' David Roediger, Los Angeles Review of Books 'The value in White Fragility lies in its methodical, irrefutable exposure of racism in thought and action, and its call for humility and vigilance' Katy Waldman, New Yorker 'A vital, necessary, and beautiful book' Michael Eric Dyson

The History Of White People written by Nell Irvin Painter and has been published by W. W. Norton & Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-04-18 with History categories.

A New York Times bestseller: “This terrific new book . . . [explores] the ‘notion of whiteness,’ an idea as dangerous as it is seductive.”—Boston Globe Telling perhaps the most important forgotten story in American history, eminent historian Nell Irvin Painter guides us through more than two thousand years of Western civilization, illuminating not only the invention of race but also the frequent praise of “whiteness” for economic, scientific, and political ends. A story filled with towering historical figures, The History of White People closes a huge gap in literature that has long focused on the non-white and forcefully reminds us that the concept of “race” is an all-too-human invention whose meaning, importance, and reality have changed as it has been driven by a long and rich history of events.

To most people Racism is a White man's thing. The South East Asians, the Chinese, Hispanics, African Americans and Arabs that I have met all believe racism is synonymous with white people who victimized them. However, in my capacity as a political refugee who has shared rooms and apartments and worked with many racial groups in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America, I don't believe in the baloney that only whites are racist. I hope I am not accused of being a white apologist. Yes whites may have perpetuated colonialism, segregation and apartheid and were heavily involved in slavery. And yes white supremacy groups, such as the Ku Klux Klan and other Neo-Nazi groups still exists. But is that all there is about racism? From my personal experience, it isn't the white people who have exhibited the most racism towards me. Unfortunately, the people who top the list of dishing out racism are those who normally complain about being the victims. In general, white people tend to show a lot of courtesy to people of color perhaps because they don't want race card used against them if non-whites don't receive what they want. Majority of whites also seems to be sensitive and are sophisticated with racism issues and take accusations of racism very serious even if they are practicing one. On the other hand, non-whites don't care whether they are called racist or not. Their logic that racism is a white man's thing is deep rooted; therefore, if you call them racist they treat it as a joke. Think Only Whites Are Racist? Think Again! is a new kind of book aimed at giving all fronts on the racial spectrum a fair shot and to make them all accountable for their actions, actions which are often detrimental to others. The book is also designed to change the current landscape of this vast topic and to usher in fresh ideas about fighting racial discrimination.

In a time of nationwide riots and protest throughout America this is a timely work by the authors that gets down to the nitty gritty of discrimination in America as experienced by his father, his mother and himself. This author a Filipino-Caucasian mestizo tells you what discrimination is really like from a historical first-person experience as he has lived it every day and been exposed to it on the streets, in the schools and in bureaucracies of America. His no holds barred story, paints a clear picture of what discrimination really looks like, feels like and how it impacts one’s outlook on life and the “American Dream”. He tells how despite his father migrating thousands of miles to experience the American dream and his mother a white American desiring for him to live and self-actualize that American dream, he experiences being a white American trapped in a brown skin and who will never be accepted by Americans universally as a “real” American. The author offers his perspective on American biases and deceit, cleverly disguised under pretenses of justice, fairness, equal opportunity, and equality under God. He challenges the reader’s analytical objectivity and conscience to first self-assess the validity of his assertions and then walk through these pages of life experiences with him in his shoes for clarity of understanding and empathy as to the denial of this first generation mestizo’s quest to be a real American and live the American Dream. The author makes a valid case that since the anti-Filipino riots in Watsonville, California in 1919 and posting of signs in businesses reading “No Dogs or Filipinos Allowed”, the multi-cultural 2020 riots for equality and justice throughout the United States graphically show that the Heart of Americans has not changed much, if any - racism is still alive and well throughout.

The Changs Next Door To The D Azes written by Wendy Cheng and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-01 with Social Science categories.

U.S. suburbs are typically imagined to be predominantly white communities, but this is increasingly untrue in many parts of the country. Examining a multiracial suburb that is decidedly nonwhite, Wendy Cheng unpacks questions of how identity—especially racial identity—is shaped by place. She offers an in-depth portrait, enriched by nearly seventy interviews, of the San Gabriel Valley, not far from downtown Los Angeles, where approximately 60 percent of residents are Asian American and more than 30 percent are Latino. At first glance, the cities of the San Gabriel Valley look like stereotypical suburbs, but almost no one who lives there is white. The Changs Next Door to the Díazes reveals how a distinct culture is being fashioned in, and simultaneously reshaping, an environment of strip malls, multifamily housing, and faux Mediterranean tract homes. Informed by her interviews as well as extensive analysis of three episodic case studies, Cheng argues that people’s daily experiences—in neighborhoods, schools, civic organizations, and public space—deeply influence their racial consciousness. In the San Gabriel Valley, racial ideologies are being reformulated by these encounters. Cheng views everyday landscapes as crucial terrains through which racial hierarchies are learned, instantiated, and transformed. She terms the process “regional racial formation,” through which locally accepted racial orders and hierarchies complicate and often challenge prevailing notions of race. There is a place-specific state of mind here, Cheng finds. Understanding the processes of racial formation in the San Gabriel Valley in the contemporary moment is important in itself but also has larger value as a model for considering the spatial dimensions of racial formation and the significant demographic shifts taking place across the national landscape.
